The Economy and Hurting LA Kids

Yesterday, LA County health officials
issued an annual report showing that the number of reported child abuse cases were up in 2007, over 2006—from 162,711 in 2006 to 167,325 in 2007, a 3 percent increase.

Reported doesn’t mean verified so it’s unclear if the increase means only that more cases are being reported—or if there’s more abuse of kids actually occurring.

According to the City News Service,
the experts who presented the report cautioned that the declining economy could lead to an actual increase in child abuse cases.

“We are now facing a horrific economic downturn, and I think we just have to be poised to once again see the impact of that on our children as families struggle to make ends meet,” said Dr. Carol Berkowitz, a pediatrician and co-chair of the Child Death Review Team which also presented its annual report today.

The new child abuse report suggests that child abuse cases increase with poverty, said Deanne Tilton Durfree, executive director of the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect.

Not a happy thought.

  • With liberals, most things are “for the children” (everything else is about Iraq.) If something is bad and can be linked to Bush, then they will find a way to show that the children are suffering because of it. This claim has as much validity as the link between the number of pirates in the world and global warming. Celeste, get real.

I find that reports of suffering increases proportionately to liberals whining.

  • “The new child abuse report suggests that child abuse cases increase with poverty….

Poverty, especially with mothers, increases with divorce. What is being done by liberal whiners to stengthen families?

  • Can we make Woody the spokesman for John McCain? Maybe get him a Fox News show? We could call it “Baked Thoughts of a Regular Conservative.” He could flood the airwaves with his belief that when people who vote for Democrats worry about child abuse, they’re really just attacking Bush. Rupert, if you’re reading, hire this kid. He’s going places.
