Free Speech LGBTQ Supreme Court

Protecting the Vile

Picketers-Church

The Supreme Court will be looking at the case involving the Westboro Baptist Church
—a hate group so uttlerly disturbed that it parodies itself, with members who revile long list of their fellow humans, gays and Catholics, at top of the list.

The court will have to decide whether to protect this group’s speech under the first amendment. This past weekend, the LA Times ran an editorial explaining—rightly—why we must protect the rights of these reprehensible, poison-filled people.

The word “vile” is inadequate to describe what members of the Westboro Baptist Church, a fringe group obsessed with homosexuality, did on the day of the memorial service for Marine Lance Corp. Matthew A. Snyder, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. The question for the Supreme Court is whether their despicable conduct is protected by the 1st Amendment — and the answer is yes.

  • Is the word Vitriol adequate to describe what the members of Westbro Baptist Church represent?

BTW, gay marriage is now legal in Mexico city, millions of gay mexicans are now very happy !!!!!!!!

  • I’d say that we should pay a group to stand outside of Westboro’s church building heckling them while its members try to worship whatever it is that they worship, but it would be more in line with Christian values to lead by example by turning the other cheek and praying for them.

  • The Westboro folks aren’t really that much crazier or more insanely defamatory than some of the despicable, provably false garbage reckless demagogues like Sarah Palin, GOP “leadership” and Tea Partiers have been broadcasting to terrorize old folks in the health care “debate.” This is just the fartherest, most surreal end of a spectrum that infects contemporary “conservatism” and religious fundamentalism at their core. For all of his sanctimony above, Woody has posted stuff here and at Marc’s blog (pedophile accusations, disgusting homophobic slurs, overt racism and jokes about Obama’s death) that’s along the same lines of psycho-talk in service of bigotry – slightly less offensive, but not by much. But the underlying issue is pretty basic First Amendment stuff.

  • I’ve got better things to do today than wrangle with a wacko.

Also, although I’m not bothering with your ridiculous link, isn’t “Governor Palin” a bit of a stretch in describing this quitter who is currently just cashing in ?

  • Thanks, Reg. I’ll take a look. Ravitch has a lot of good stuff to say, although I don’t entirely agree with her analysis of charters—at least what I’ve heard. But I’m interested to read her book.

I’ll check out the TNR piece. Thanks again.

  • I heard Sarah Palin is giving a speech at MIT and Harvard her topic “A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste”. Also heard many liberals are going pyscho at the thought of Sarah sharing her wisdom and knowledege with our brightest students.

  • RT – I’m pretty sure that was a satirical comment. Nobody – except Woody – is that stupid. Otherwise “WhiskeyTangoFoxfuckingtrot ?!?!?!”

  • Reg’s first post would probably sit real well with the congregation at Westboro, it’s just their style of attack. As for Palin “cashing in”, they all do but only the truly stupid point out a single person or party.

More fraudlent posts from the witless king.

  • SF is still a lameass, weak little idiot, blowin smoke out of his ass…gallantly defending the asshole who pulls “child molester” out when he’s losing an argument. This, of course, figures from the “bitch” and “snitch” King, with a specialty in fantasies about prison gang rape !

  • It’s amazing how you liberals are like those horses in “Young Frankenstein,” that rear up and whinny at every mention of Frau Bleuker’s name. Just say “Sarah Palin” and liberals act just like those horses.

  • reg has temporarily stepped away to take part in Truckee, California festivities.

An obscene snow sculpture built in the center of downtown Truckee by a crew producing an MTV reality show has angered town officials and residents.

“It was a giant penis with water shooting out,”….

“We were so appalled that something like this could take place in our town. Parents were rushing their children away from it so they would not have to explain why grown men wearing fur were drinking the white fluid and dancing in it, too,”….

  • Thanks for the link, Reg. I may post a bit about ed issues tonight or later in the week. Arnie Duncan took a little time to get his feet under him, but over the past year he’s really talked to an impressively smart variety of people—and learned from it— and now is making what seem like some decent moves.

  • WTF, give me one example of Sarah Palin ever showing any kind of wisdom or knowledge.

    **************************

R.T. do you know the meaning of sarcasm? You must think I am a supporter of the Alaskan Bimbo, you are very wrong.

Sarah Palinn is a prime example of the dumbing dowm of America, anyone who would consider Sarah The Bimbo, a viable candidate for any office is a wacko, just like the wackos who believe the “republicans” are worse than the mexican drug cartels. R.T do you still fear the minutemen and consider them a terrorist group who pose any real threat to anyone in our society?

  • Why do you call people “wacko”? Is this to give the impression that you’re sane? Wouldn’t someone who spends their entire days trolling blogs under names like “WTF” and “Unapologetic Troll” qualify as a “wacko”, too, to some extent?

  • Woody, who’s angry at Sarah Palin? All I see are people making fun of her. Sarah Palin is nothing more than a citizen in Alaska who’s in love with the camera. She’s a failed candidate for vice president and she’s not even a stateswoman anymore. She quit that job, presumably because she’s unable to concentrate on running her state and figuring out new ways to get attention from the national media. Combined with her multi tasking skills and her brilliant interview with Kate Couric (“I can see Russia from my house”), it comes as a real shock that 70 million Americans voted to keep her as far away from the white house as possible (a record number, for measure). People who despite Sarah Palin for her politics have no reason to be angry. She’s done nothing but bury herself practically since coming onto the scene. It’s her supporters, who feel compelled to defend her, that bare the burden of anger. Without her, it’s possible John McCain would be our president today, considering he and Obama were neck in neck in the polls prior to Palin going mayday in the Couric interview. As someone who takes great joy in watching the Republican lose, I can only say that Sarah Palin is the gift that keeps on giving. She doesn’t make me angry. The mere sight of her brings me joy. Because the more she talks, the better it is for her party’s opposition. Here’s to Sarah Palin being around for a long time! Cheers.

  • “the gutter occupied by our usual suspects.”

Thanks for underscoring my point, Woody. I can always count on you to affirm the fact that you’ve got some very weird fixations that go well beyond your crap-for-brains wacko-Right recycled cliches, bigotry and lies.

  • OK, Woody. Sarah Palin’s ticket actually won the 2008 election. She never stepped down as governor of Alaska. She avoids the camera at all costs, no t.v. engagements, whatsoever. She didn’t tell Kate Couric she could see Russia from her house in response to a national security question. 70 million people didn’t vote for Obama. You’re right. I made it up.
