Sheriff Joe Jumps the Shark

Get the butterfly net! Call the ski patrol.
Waiter, a pinot noir for me, and a 72-hour psych hold for my friend, ASAP!

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, has just launched himself into the idiot-sphere. (Unfortunately with consequences for real people.)

Here’s the deal. Yesterday, Jumpin’ Joe took 60 deputies and a posse and staged a 2 a.m. raid in some unusual places in Mesa, Arizona. (A posse, no less! Do they still have posses? Yep, in Joe’s world they do.).

Anyway, Whack Job Joe, plus the deputies and the posse, rolled up to Mesa in the middle of the night— wearing battle gear, waving semi-automatic weapons, accompanied by dogs—-and proceeded to launch full-on raids on those bastions of crime: Mesa City Hall and the Mesa Public library.

And for whom were they looking with this Kevlar-clad assault force?
An escaped serial killer? Terrorists with dirty bombs?

Uh, no. Undocumented workers.

Oh, and did I mention that Jack-Ass Joe has no real jurisdiction in Mesa? He’s the County Sheriff. But Mesa has its own police department headed by my pal, former LAPD Assistant Chief George Gascon.

In other words, aside from its other moronic qualities, this raid is the legal equivalent of Lee Baca taking a battalion of deputies (plus posse, let’s not forget the posse) and raiding Los Angeles City Hall and the downtown LA Library on 5th street. (In the middle of the night. Pointing semi-automatics. Looking to see if everybody on the cleaning staff has the right immigration papers.)

I’ve gotta go teach at UC Irvine, but here’s a clip from the story from Friday’s Arizona Republic:

I believe the safety of our citizens was gravely compromised” when Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies in “battle gear” swept into city buildings about 2 a.m. while cleaning crews were at work, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith told reporters. “I believe we had set the scene where bad things could have happened.”

Arpaio defended his tactics, claiming the raid came only after a former city employee called the sheriff’s illegal-immigration hotline to report that a cleaning company under contract with the city was hiring illegal immigrants.
Arpaio said the informant had tipped off a Mesa police lieutenant and said the lieutenant brushed off the request, saying it was a problem for the cleaning company.

But a city spokeswoman late Thursday said police Lt. Wade Pew and city staff met with the cleaning company, Management Cleaning Controls, on May 21 after he received the information.

A follow-up e-mail sent June 4 by facilities maintenance director Dennis Ray to cleaning company officials reiterated the city’s concerns over “several security issues that have recently been brought to our attention,” and included a section of the city’s contract requiring that contractors ensure all workers are legal.

Predawn raid

Arpaio said the raid was set up after a sheriff’s undercover detective
infiltrated the cleaning business, claiming to be an undocumented immigrant, and was schooled by a manager in how to obtain false identification that would get him past federal identification verification software.

About 30 deputies and 30 volunteer posse members in bulletproof vests and carrying semi-automatic weapons prepared for the operation in Pioneer Park across from the Mormon Temple shortly after midnight.

The deputies, carrying 25 arrest warrants, headed for the library and City Hall, an eight-story building that houses several municipal departments as well as the mayor’s and council members’ offices.

Deputies fanned out and arrested three people; 13 others, including a manager at Management Cleaning Controls, were arrested at residences later that morning, Arpaio said. Ten were arrested on suspicion of identity theft and six for potentially being in the country illegally.

The 16 arrested included six people who were not named in the warrants. Arpaio said they are still looking for 15 more company employees.

Smith said that most of the janitorial workers at the public buildings were either U.S. citizens or in the country legally and that they were terrified by the size and firepower of the sheriff’s force.

And please make sure you read this part:

Arpaio denied questions about whether the raid was politically motivated [He hates Gascon, who has out maneuvered him at every turn, simply because Gascon is the smarter, more decent officer) or that it was timed to deflect attention from a videotape that surfaced Wednesday depicting the brutal death of an inmate at a county jail, which his office runs. The inmate’s family has filed intent to sue the county.

Oh, gee. That certainly couldn’t have been it.

More when I have it. (And you can bet there will be more.)

(A Chapeau Tip for flagging the story to the always wildly smart Dan Kowalski.)

  • Just being helpful….

Celeste: (In the middle of the night. Pointing semi-automatics. Looking to see if everybody…has the right immigration papers.)

Oh, for a minute there, I thought that you were talking about Janet Reno’s Justice Department. At least the sheriff didn’t burn them out. Then, I think about that poor Elian Gonzalez, who was terrifed by the assault weapons pointed at him to rush him out of the country and appease Uncle Fidel.

Celeste: Oh, and did I mention that Jack-Ass Joe has no jurisdiction in Mesa?

Are you sure? Do voters in the city not vote for county sheriff? Does Chief Gascon have some special privilege to toss the Sheriff out and release his prisoners?

Does the sheriff dept have jurisdiction within city limits?

Good luck on telling a Sheriff that he can’t serve you with a subpoena inside the city limits or telling him that he can’t give you a ticket once you passed the city limit sign.

Sheriff Arpaio shouldn’t be wasting his time rounding up illegals when he should be chasing ACORN voter registration activists, who threaten our democracy more with massive vote fraud.

  • Idiot is too nice a word for this Barnum & Bailey sideshow freak. During Holy Week this year Arpaio set up roadblocks a short distance from Church’s in Maricopa County’s predominately Mexican American area’s.
Arpaio and his 160 man police force (plus a reported 3000 man posse he deputized as right wing goon squad), stopped and questioned people as to their immigration status.
This on Good Friday when people of the Catholic Religion mourn the crucifixtion of Jesus Christ.
Arpaio’s reply, “It’s just another day to me”

Arpaio’s one of the worst Mexi-Phobics in the country, I hope Chief Gascon kicks his xenophobic ass.

  • Come on Quixote. you know you’re probably drinking Bloody Marys on Good Friday. Don’t give us this “bleeding catholic” character to accompany all your other supposed postures for the cause.

Sherrif Joe is exercising what his constituents expect him to do and have elected him repeatedly to do, and that is to police the illegal invasion of desperate souls “yearning to be free”, and sucking up what meager public services are available to documented CITIZENS of the USA. Not MEXICO, pendejo. AMERICA.

Your agenda has been apparent for awhile, but I’m afraid the volatile state of our economy just won’t allow the excess expense of your “chosen people” to squat unabated. Sorry!

  • I’m glad this story is getting some notice outside of Maricopa County. I’m a Mesa, AZ, blogger and am livid about Arpaio’s storming of our Library and City Hall. As you can see from a visit to my blog, I am a staunch conservative, but am voting against our thug sheriff for his Democratic opponent.

Essentially, Arpaio has declared a de facto turf war with other regional law enforcement agencies. I don’t want two heavily armed groups fighting over jurisdiction at 2 am in the streets of my town. Joe has GOT to go.

  • Jon, you have my sympathies. This would be slapstick funny if it didn’t have the potential to be so deathly dangerous.

    As in,

Sheriff Joe is so confused he brought a K-9 crew. No, Joe. You Mor-an! You’re in Arizona, not Georgia! A real western posse has horses, not dogs.

Metaphorically speaking, I hope Gascon finds a way to hand Sheriff Joe his ass stuffed with his very shiny sheriff’s badge. That would be justice.

  • In the Arizona Republic News, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith;
“Smith said Thursday he had no problem with enforcing the law but also blistered Arpaio for not telling the city about the raid ahead of time.

Public safety was “gravely compromised” by the dead-of-night, paramilitary operation, he said, which could have resulted in bloodshed had Mesa police confronted an armed group with no advance notice.

Smith said Mesa’s city hall and other buildings were “violated by another government agency.”

I guess this Arpaio nut and his “posse” are the new Nazi “Brown Shirts” in Arizona.
With Arpaio’s ethnic cleansing (anyone who looks like a Mexican and has a job), his famous tent city jail concentration camps, his blitzkrieg midnight attacks on office bldgs, public library’s and places of worship. and now the Mexi-phobe County Sheriff going “Storm Trooper” against other sovereign Municipalities without notification to enforce Federal Immigration Law.
What’s next? An Arpaio crusade against “Entartete Kunst” (Degenerate art)?
Arapaio enforcing an English only law?
An Arpaio “Beer Hall Putsch” seizing control of Mesa Ariz?

“Arpaio said the raid was set up after a sheriff’s undercover detective infiltrated the cleaning business”.

Woooooo! And the subsequent arrest of three janitors!

What an embarrasment to the State of Arizona and the USA.

  • Jon: Essentially, Arpaio has declared a de facto turf war with other regional law enforcement agencies.

Enforcing the law is not declaring a war on the “other” cops. It’s doing the job that they have refused to do. So, the question should be, “Why doesn’t Celeste’s friend do what he swore that he would do–uphold the law?” Why does he take the substantial theft of taxpayer paid services by illegals so lightly?

  • Someone like Crazy Joe needs to help secure our borders since the federal government is only concerned with Arab terrorists and not the Mexican Terrorists South of our Borders. I wonder how many 6 year old kids like Cole Puffinburger of Las Vegas have to be kidnapped before the rest of the country wakes up to the fact that mexican drug cartels are in our midst.

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/mexico/tijuana/20081016-0128-mexicotravelalert.html

TUCSON, Ariz. – The U.S. State Department has added the border city of Nogales to its list of places in Mexico where American travelers should be wary because of increasing violence.

  • Celeste
You are absoultely right about Arpaio being a nut job. The first question though that comes to mind is where are the governmental agencies and NGOs that are supposed to protect civil liberties in this country? Not a peep is heard from the US Department of Justice, the ACLU or Amnesty International (this last one is too busy looking at DNA backlogs in police agencies who don’t commit human rights violations. WTF???)

  • Arpaio is what needs doing in his part of THIS COUNTRY/ cleaning house. Sweep all those dust bunnies back to Mejico where they came from. Granted it’s convenient to focus all avarice towards the greedy Wall Streeters these days, but one must realize that the candle’s been ignited at both ends. Unscrupulous entities are stoking the fires from the bottom of the food chain too.

Mexican drug dealers are suspected in the kidnapping of the child.

Authorities continued to scour northeastern Las Vegas for signs of Cole and released the name and photo of a man they believed was involved in the abduction. They asked members of the public to contact police if they spot Jesus Gastelum (an undocumented worker)

The brazen kidnapping — three armed Latino men broke into Cole’s home, tied up his mother and her boyfriend and ransacked the house — is apparently a troubling migration of what has become a regular hazard in Mexico, where drug cartels abduct rivals or innocent bystanders for huge ransoms.

In the U.S., such incidents are rare, though authorities in Arizona have been worried about increasing numbers of organized kidnappings of illegal immigrants and their smugglers in Phoenix.

  • I can’t believe people still vote for this loser. I am a conservative and a republican but I would vote for any democrat in the world before voting for this guy. People need to take a stand and we need to get this guy out of town.

  • Good excercise, no one harmed, endangered no one. Should have been handled asap my city, they were the slackers in this case. Cleaning company needs replaced, prosucuted, fined and band from present and future goverment contracts.
