UPDATE: As most of you know by now
, the fourth officer has died.

Here’s the link to the Oakland Police Officer’s Association. I’m sure any notes of sympathy would be welcomed.

HERE’s an article from the SF Chron about the discussion
and analysis taking place among police officers and other law enforcement experts to determine what went wrong that resulted in the Oakland officers’ deaths, and what, if anything, could have been done differently.
*******************************************************************************************************

It is one of the deadliest police shootings in California history.
Yesterday, Saturday, in the course of two separate shooting incidents, two hours apart—each allegedly involving a single shooter—three Oakland police officers have been killed. Another is gravely wounded.

Our grief, sorrow and sympathy goes out to Oakland
and its law enforcement community.

Here are stories from the LA Times, the NY Times, and two from the Oakland Tribune—
and here.

  • This is sickening, but let’s analyze a couple lessons.

Oakland Tribune: Dunakin and Hege were shot with a handgun during a traffic stop

As opposed to a bow and arrow? Well, if this isn’t proof that guns need to be confiscated, then I don’t know what is. Oh, wait. Did the murderer have this gun illegally? Well, how did that happen if the law said that he shouldn’t?

    – – –

Oakland Tribune: The suspect was identified as Oakland resident Lovelle Mixon, 26. He was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He had a no-bail warrant for his arrest on charges of violating parole. He had previous convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.

LAT: The suspect in the officers’ slayings was a recent parolee and state Attorney General and former Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown commented privately on the difficulty of keeping track of them.

Why in the word was this guy on the streets? Why can’t they keep track of parolees and why do they let them out if they can’t keep track?

So, let’s just open up the prisons and let more out to stop overcrowding. Hey, isn’t his like Willie Horton…let ’em out and let ’em kill?

(reg, did you know that the murderer is black, not that it has to do with anything or that you would know it from the text. What is it about that culture?)

  • Go fuck yourself, you racist pig. You reveal yourself to be ever more disgusting with each thread. Piggybacking on this tragedy with your sociopathic screeds is par for the course in your wretched little world.

I’m through with you now, having proven beyond any doubt that you are dishonest, intellectually incompetent, too cowardly and confused to even discuss some affront to common sense like “mark to model” accounting with a layman (and ultimately proving my point when you offer a link as your last resort), and bigoted beyond redemption.

A pathetic little man. I’ve been right about you since Day One when I pegged you as a disreputable, dishonest idiot.

  • Moore – you’re as lost in the ozone of disinformation as your buddy. Al Gore mentioned the furlough program in a 1988 primary debate, but no “Willie Horton” ads were run by Democrats.

  • Well, thanks Woody and John Moore for ruining another fine Sunday for Reg. It is a completely malignant experience to have Reg dropping the F word around here again in happy acres. He should really stop shaming the family!

  • Isn’t this the same city where another white cop (Johannes Mehserle) killed an unarmed innocent black man (Oscar J. Grant). How does one man kill four well trained killer cops who wear bullet proof vests? This smells like an innocent black man being setup and killed on the streets by the all to common racist and corrupt cops. The real killers are one group of corrupt cops killing another group of corrupt cops, just like the movie “The Departed”

And all these comments and stories about Lovelle Mixon being a parolee are just more lies in preparation for the police cover-up of another person of color !!!!

Did everyone already forget about the all too common story about Mario Rocha an innocent person of color being framed by the cops and prosecutors ????

    http://witnessla.com/crime-and-punishment/2009/admin/mario-rochas-story-on-showtime/

I’m confident Lovelle Mixon was another innocent victim of the man, cops and the D.A., and after this far to common murder of Lovelle Mixon by corrupt cops he is being tried by bloggers and the racist media. We all know how the media and blogs love to portray good cops vs the bad black man to attract more readers. Well I will not be fooled and don’t you be fooled either.

  • Doh – I’m glad you’re not involved in cancer treatment, because your understanding of what’s truly malignant and what is merely the antidote is more than a bit topsy-turvy. The resident moron took the occasion of three officers being killed to engage in his usual racist rants and unprovoked ad hominem trolliing to elicit a response from me, based on his being revealed (once again) as a fool in another discussion. That’s the real shame in this Sunday thread. Since it offends your delicate sensibilities and you seem to be another irritant in the Woody/Moore mold, I’ll take this opportunity to suggest, “fuck you too.”

  • Celeste,
One loves the internet for it’s revolutionary ability to allow people to communicate on every conceivable topic in the universe. However, I think folks sometimes forget how to do actually communication in humane ways. I don’t have my political views at the ready to provoke others today. Would just like to ask if you know of any place where one can send a card of condolence and/or donation in sympathy to the fallen officers’ families in Oakland?

  • “Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said details about how to make donations in honor of the fallen officers would be available by Monday.”

Here’s the website of the OPOA – I’m sure any condolences sent to them will be handled properly and directed to the officer’s families.

  • Thanks for those links, reg, it really is a horrible weekend for Oakland, and the officers’ families deserve all the support we can give them.

  • Alas, don’t be so hard on Woody and John Moore, they were just born to late, they should have lived in the time of slavery and white man’s burden. They would have been happy as plantation owners in Georgia a couple of hundred years ago.
Unfortunately they were born too late and now must witness the country being run by a black man as President, Mexicans repopulating the Southwest and taking power, the formerly excluded Asians kicking ass in the schools and university’s they attend, Gay people being legitimized and doing their thing in public without being put in jail, white women even marrying out of their race as an everyday occurrence.

These poor guys had a last chance at power, one last gasp at Imperialism, and Fascism with the Bush/Cheney regime but alas, bungled it badly, (greed had the last word), and now are relegated to sitting on the sidelines, sniping, griping, and being outraged at the world passing them by.
Don’t be too hard on them, they are relics of a bygone era and they were just born too late.

  • reg and Kevin, why I had no idea that you would get upset by something that I said. Could you be a little more specific?

  • reg, you’re overdoing it a little bit with your “mark to model” nonsense. You proved my original point that you have no clue about auditing standards setting and reasons behind them and that it’s a waste of time to discuss it with you, besides it being off topic.

I know how complicated the process can be and how the AICPA, with the SEC’s blessings, try to make standards that present as fairly as practicable the financial conditions of companies. You on the other hand choose to believe that the AICPA and the SEC set standards with the intent to cheat the little man. When you think of cheating, you must be projecting.

But, if you have a better system, then please enlighten the folks in NYC. First, however, get yourself a degree, pass the CPA exam, and gain some practical experience so that you know a little more about the subject and have a little credibility.

After all, I did with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in accounting along with being in the business my whole working life and teaching the CPA review course and the Certified Management Accounting review course.

Your inferiority complex is showing up big time.

But, don’t give up on becoming a CPA. I’ve heard that they don’t discriminate against homosexuals.

  • this tragedy has sickened everyone. my heart goes out to the officers family’s. the language used in the comment space is totally disgusting and disrespectful. there are more black men being successful and respected in the world than ever before. these guys love being career criminals, watch 48 hrs. and you cannot believe the reason they kill there own blood. they have absolutely no value on life. i don’tknow how a policeman can pull anyone over without having there gun drawn.you are nothing but a target 24-7. god bless these men as they give there life away for us everytime they hit the streets.

  • The Oakland Police Officers Association is in the process of setting up trust accounts for the families. Until those are set up anyone can mail checks to the Oakland Police Officers Association, 555 Fifth st., Oakland, CA 94607.
