Wellness Foundation Has $$$ for Homeboy Industries

Tuesday, Julio Marcial, a program director for the California Wellness Foundation
, announced that Wellness has just stepped in with a fiscal finger in the dike for Homeboy Industries in the form of the $250,000 grant.

Here’s what the Wellness release said in part:

In 2008, HI [Homeboy Industries} served 8,000 young men and women
who formerly belonged to approximately 700 gangs across Los Angeles County. They work in its highly successful bakery and cafe, or in landscaping or solar panel installation. In addition to providing job training and placement assistance, HI offers free tattoo removal.
“As California faces a daunting state budget deficit, tough decisions will have to be made about the most effective allocation of resources for violence prevention programs,” said Julio Marcial, TCWF program director.

“Those of us who have witnessed first-hand the thousands of lives saved by violence prevention programs, such as the work of Homeboy Industries, over the past 15 years – – and the millions of dollars saved in hospital care and police and fire response – – must do all we can to insure that these programs continue to reduce violence against youth,” added Marcial. “Just as violence has many causes, there is no single means of preventing it.”

Certainly, this is not a huge grant and it is to be spread over two years. But, I spoke with Julio Tuesday afternoon and he was more than aware of Homeboy’s cash flow issues and said that the organization will get the first infusion of funds—$150,000—fairly immediately.

That money will allow Homeboy to make its payroll.

Now let’s hope that the City of LA comes up with the $500,000 in funding
it has recently re-promised it will give Homeboy in September (as opposed to July, which was the original promised delivery date).

OH, AND BY THE WAY…. You’ll note that Wellness mentions the fact that,
in 2008, Homeboy served approximately 8,000 men and women from all over Los Angeles County. I should mention that Julio Marcial, who is Wellness’s program director for the foundation’s violence prevention funding, is exceptionally well informed in this field, and does not toss around such information lightly.

So tuck that number in the back of your mind: 8000 people served.

Such numbers will figure prominently in our further discussions of the way we are allocating our tax money for gang intervention and prevention in the city of Los Angeles and in LA County.

NOTE: Don’t forget Homeboy’s virtual carwash.

  • (Sigh) Rob, it would be refreshing if you’d occasionally make a comment that wasn’t at the level of an 11-year-old boy’s double entendre. I remember when my son was at this stage. But he was a preteen.

  • Let’s compare the cost/benefit of job creation of Homeboy Industries with that of Obama’s Stimulus.

“Stimulus” Spending Has Created 50 Jobs In New Hampsire At A Cost Of $8.32 Million/Job

The Office of Legislative Budget Assistant reported last week that $413.6 million made its way to the state under a list of programs that involve education, highways, environmental, health and human services, energy and law enforcement. So far, a total of 50 jobs have been created by the funding, 34 of them full time.

You might have to check the math, but I think that Homeboy Industries didn’t require $8 million to creat each job. Check to see if any of that money being tossed to the wind can wind its way to H.I., which actually produces results.

  • Should I put up a 3 year old comment from In The Hat or a bunch Most Interesting Man in the World snipets ? Which is more mature?

  • Besides removing tattoos to help people get jobs, Homeboy Industries should offer a service to help people change their names. That’s something that would make a difference in the perceptions of them by potential employers and help former gang members break from their past. Plus, it’s cheap and effective. You don’t need to wait on large grants to offer this.

Study: ‘Black-Sounding’ Names Prompt Fewer Job Callbacks

The path to poverty and crime begins at birth when stupid or trashy parents name their kids. It goes with white-trash names, too. I don’t know the Mexican or Asian equivalents, but there has to be some.

But, guess what. It’s unlikely that liberals would accept this idea because it might “offend someone” to tell them that their culturally name is going to hurt their chances for a job, and they would reject such a notion and instead call the employers racist and go after them. Yeah, don’t assimilate but stubbornly resist for your pride, despite how it hurts your life.

And, just because someone named Barack (who went by Barry) was elected President doesn’t mean that you can get a job as a fry cook if you can’t even get an interview with your name that tips you off as being different.

Good luck, Knoshawn, Shaniqua, and Roshanda.

But, for people with common sense, get out there and file those petitions with the courts. Homeboy Industries can help…if they want, or you can follow this.

  • Well that one’s surely going to prompt some hot response, Woody. I can understand the thinking that would cause you to make such a suggestion to Homeboys and elsewhere Those names make me laugh too, but I’m afraid your feelings very well may be some of the last gasps of a changing demographic and a shifting population base. Those names were most probably bestowed to distinguish the kid over the more Anglo names that were given freed slaves after Abolition, but we know this. They seemed to have really gained momentum during the 60s with the onset of Civil Rights, and reached the ridiculous lately. I was sure into the 90s that maybe the names might normalize, but it aint happened. It’s another of those idiosyncracies that give a cynical observer like me some real delight. Because its only a name. I’m in the middle of the continental US here in KS. We have a vast diaspora of humankind. I have a neighbor, I’m thinking from the backwoods of some farther southern State. His name is Tyson, he’s whiter’n me, chews tobacco, and has no idea how his name tickles my funnybone. I shouted to the wife the other day as Tyson was tuning one of his many vehicles, polluting the neighborhood with noise and smoke to “tell me true, is Tyson a boxer or a chicken strip?” She shouted back I couldn’t fool her, he was a hillbilly and we ought to buy the house he rents to get rid of him.

  • Gava Joe, today I can see not naming a kid Leroy, why did they stop giving their kids names like Roosevelt Lincoln Jones?

  • Tyson isn’t a good name? It’s better than Billy Bob. A lot of people in the South use both their first and middle names, sort of like you…Gava and Joe.

  • it sounds a little racist woody and some people might consider changing there name selling out. but it is also very true what you say i have seen it first hand a strange name and your app gets passed right by.

  • According to the US Government, the stimulus plan has so far created 16,000 jobs in New Hampshire, not 50. But then the blogger Rob misread an article and put out a post that is completely factually wrong. How am I not surprised which one Woody believes.

  • Rob, some reasonable points. (Although the silly most interesting man in the world thing struck me as funny on a very hot Friday afternoon after my spider wars. But maybe that was because I was the object of it. Hard to say.)

  • Mavis, you accept phony figures. Do you have any idea how made up and contrived the employment figures from Obama are? I’ve seen how they sample companys. It’s a big joke.

If there were 16,000 jobs created in New Hampshire, perhaps you can tell us where they are. NH jobless rate rises: Highest since 1993

From May 2009 to June 2009, the total labor force dropped by 3,850, to 738,110. The number of unemployed residents increased by 1,630 over the month to 50,090 — 22,610 more unemployed than in June 2008.

It seems that it’s you who believes what you want.

  • For smartypants Woody’s info my screen name is an anachronism (sp?) for “gavacho” the slang Spanish term for a white boy… I’m proud of my handle and remember clearly the very bottle of Samuel Adams that helped to create it.

  • Oh Woody, no defense so you play offense. I obviously can not independently verify the US Government figures. You can accept them or not. I can, however, independently verify that the link you posted was utter bullshit. The blogger you cited misread the article he linked to. You willingly believed that the millions were spent only 50 jobs and when I call you out on being 100% factually wrong, you don’t defend it or admit error. Not very personally responsible of you.

  • People who have issues with “black” sounding names in general have issues with “black” looking people. I have a name that doesn’t exactly peg me as anything specifically. In fact even my gender sometimes is in question if people don’t talk to me on the phone first. I have a voice that doesn’t peg me as anything specifically, but in general I can see that many times people are shocked that I’m black.

Now possibly those people may have never called me in to an interview if my name sounded more “black,” but in general once I come in I have never gotten a call back from people who thought I was white, but saw that in person that I was black, so possibly having a black name will just save you money via travel time so you don’t have to waste your time on someone who has preconcieved notions of what people of certain ethnicities can or can not do.

  • I wonder if our society wouldn’t find more parity if much like the Israelis have mandatory military service, each person was subject to “racial/gender reassignment at a certain age? How many of you are breathing sighs of relief that it’s only my silly fantasy? Of course that would exclude MJ because he’s dead (and it seemed to be his goal)..There’s no room for happiness in my fantasies.
