  • Tanaka should let Lasd go and move on, just like Hayhurst,@ ALADS, should move on. Both of them are retired and neither organization wants them back. It is a known fact, that both of them are in cahoots with each other. Their lives are empty without LIES & DRAMA.

  • Olmsted is a little to angry for our taste. Also, people are beginning to find out that he’s invested much of his time in Orange County, not in LA. Why would anyone vote for someone who has no vested interest in Los Angeles County other than running for office? No thanks……Olmsted has no following and will not be a factor.

BTW- Hellmold really put Olmsted in his place last night. I guess the TRUTH stings. Great job James!

Can’t wait until the next one.

  • #2: “BTW–Hellmold really put Olmsted in his place last night.”

That’s the circular firing squad at work. After all the rounds have been fired guess who’s going to left standing–the guy from the LAPD.

  • James Hemmold couldn’t carry Olmsted’s patrol bag! Once gain to educate you the only pol out indicates Olmsted ahead. If you have some facts other than your feelings then write about it and show us where Hemmold has any juice with anybody!Hemmold hid and illegally held complaints at Century and left the deputies out to dry with uninvestigated complaints! And I know this for a fact as it was brought up at EPC and Baca refused to act. Just ask Waldie!!

This campaign has a long way to go and your “James’ better pray that no more girlfriends show up!

We need a leader not another version of Baca!!

  • @ #1

Tanaka is not going away. In fact, his ship is getting bigger and bigger as we speak. I attended the debate last night and sat in the front row. A lady (Kathrine) I met, who is a local church goer, told me she couldn’t believe how much support Paul Tanaka had. She told me she signed up to be one of his volunteers last night. I was quite surprised. Based on his popularity (Liked or not liked), money, resources and fanfare, I see Tanaka being a front runner….

Don’t mean to burst anyones bubble, but Tanaka seems like a nice guy. Can’t wait until June!

  • As most employees on the Sheriff’s Department know,in 2013, Mr. Hellmold revealed his lack of character, lack of integrity and lack of morals for all to see. He, is the last person running for sheriff who should point fingers at anyone else.

  • Apparently “yup” did not watch the debate. Olmsted was the only one who is honest and can get the job done. Hellmold is nothing but a left over from Tanaka. He is just as responsible as Tanaka for the mess of the Department. He should retire and move on so the department can be saved from itself.

  • This was posted on Tanaka’s social media page. Hey Craig, Lennox Station was fine in the 80s and 90s. The Mr Tee influence only divided the Station into the I’m political and knock on doors for Paul or the I’m not political groups. Those that chose to do their jobs without being in Paul’s pocket were all in the got nothing coming club. Those that chose to violate all principles and support Paul’s Gardena campaign by knocking on doors on and off duty were all rewarded. Sgts, Lts, Cpts, Homicide guys, most of you got these spots by backing Paul’s political campaigns. Paul is an evil little man who will cut you loose if you get caught doing his bidding, ask Greg Thompson.

By Craig Ditsch, Retired Lieutenant, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

    Telling It Like It Is

I’d like to remind LA County residents and current and former members of the LA County Sheriff’s Department about a few things.

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Lennox Station was a terrible place to work. Morale was at its lowest and the station deputies didn’t want to work because they weren’t being supported by their supervisors. Paul Tanaka was a newly promoted lieutenant who was sent to Lennox Station. Mr. Tanaka quickly diagnosed the problem and convinced the command staff at Lennox Station to recruit good sergeants and lieutenants to supervise the hard working deputies who were already there. Mr. Tanaka’s plan was put into action and quickly turned Lennox Station into the best station in the County.

A few years later, after reaching the rank of Area Commander, Paul Tanaka oversaw a very troubled Century Station. Mr. Tanaka hand-picked the Captain, recruited good sergeants and lieutenants, and gave this Captain all of the resources that he needed to turn Century Station into the proud, hard working station that it is today.

When LASD took over Compton Police Department, Compton Station was filled with inexperienced deputies who knew too little about the community or the crime rate. Mr. Tanaka used the same successful concept to turn Compton Station into the proud, hard working station that it is today, as well.

Paul Tanaka took over the Sheriff’s Department budget when there was a $25 million deficit. He balanced our budget and led us through the economic crash, when the County Board of Supervisors took an additional $350 million out of the Sheriff’s budget.

Paul Tanaka is all about taking criminals to jail, which makes our communities safe for our loved ones. Mr. Tanaka has funded and supported two task forces with personnel and resources in order to do their jobs. The Homicide Task Force, which is now 60 people strong, and has gang investigators, narcotic investigators, and homicide investigators working together to get the bad guys. The Burglary-Robbery Task Force, out of Major Crimes Bureau, works series robberies and burglaries throughout the County. These two task forces have had great success fighting the bad guys, and probably would not exist without the support that Mr. Tanaka has given them.

Paul Tanaka has always shown tremendous support toward deputies who are out doing the Lord’s work everyday, whether those deputies work the jails, the streets, or an investigative function. What high-ranking executive of the Sheriff’s Department has ever sat down with 200 Men’s Central Jail deputies and listened to their complaints, when their Captain and their Commander wanted to disrupt the lives of 600 deputies by transferring them to different assignments and different shifts, in order to solve the problem with 10 to 15 deputies? Paul Tanaka did! Then Mr. Tanaka prevented that ridiculous plan from being implemented. Nobody supports hard working deputies, who are doing the right thing, for the right reasons, like Paul Tanaka! We need to start showing Paul our support and help his campaign!

Paul Tanaka has always rewarded hard work and supported those who worked hard. Now is the time for all of us who know that Paul is the right person to be our next Sheriff to step up and be counted.

  • Doing My Job Says:

Your viewing the Mr.Tanaka through rose colored glasses and wishing it does not make it so. The department is in serious trouble because of Sheriff Baca’a neglect and Mr. Tanaka’s extreme ambition, greed, arrogance and lack of integrity. He lies and continues to lie. Please, listen to the Jail Commission hearings and you will learn the truth.

  • Doing my job, I will not disagree with the resources that were dedicated to Compton and Century Station. Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize if you increase resources to a problem area you will get positive results. I would like to ask Tanaka why he didn’t dedicate some additional resources to Special Victims Bureau. SVB handles very sensitive and labor intensive cases, and that’s not even addressing the subject matter detectives have to see. SVB is so understaffed that it is a matter of time before an SVB case blows up in our face. Again, no arguments in locking up gangsters, but how about helping the true vixtims, innocent children!!!

  • 8: too much look-aid. According to many of the indicted deputies, Paul Tanaka, ordered them to commit crimes re the FBI informant. I guess they are all lying?? Paul didn’t do himself any favors and making up so-called people who attended only shows a state of delusion!!

  • Yup, I’m guessing you were one of those cheerleaders in the front row wearing the worn-out Tanaka shirts, clapping each time he refused to answer a question. In case anyone needs reminding, Hellmold always was part of Tanaka’s inner circle, cigar coin and all. He positioned himself carefully between the incompetent Baca and the corrupt Tanaka to leverage patronage to its maximum advantage. Now Hellmold wants to claim that he is NOT part of the inner circle?

Although Baca has retired, he’s been very busy strong arming wealthy reserves throughout the county to support his boy, Hellmold. If they refuse, they get the boot from Reserve Forces. Pretty good scam, eh James? [edited by WLA. Unsupported accusation.]

Jimmy “the crime fighter,” why don’t you take some of your ill-earned campaign contributions and repay all the deputies and sergeants who got burned behind your lack of leadership at Compton? Something about the watch commander bearing ultimate responsibility for the outcome of a pursuit…

Now back to Yup, the McDonnell campaign wants to thank you for your continued support in making his coronation possible. Do you actually think honest deputies would sit on their hands and watch the department fall into the hands (again) of the one man bent on destroying it?

  • Read the articles and viewed the videos from the debate and my prediction has not changed.

    Vince Lou. 3%
    Hellmold. Going negative. 10%
    Olmsted. Staying negative 10%
Tanaka. Talking about positive goals but still to many negatives 13%
Gomez. Going after Tanaka but still the only Hispanic in the race 17%
Rogers. Wisely I think did not participate. Strong political base 19%
Mcdonell clear front runner, above the fray, outsider… 28%

  • To LATBG: The information regarding Reserve Unit sounds very scandalous, but from the list of recent retirees (Detective Division Unit) it all makes sense.

Who is the current Captain of Reserve Unit?

[Edited by WLA. No references to personal lives!]

And now the recent erroneous release of an inmate from IRC. Just doesn’t get any better for custody. Geeez.

  • #9-

Do you mean the Jail Commission that did not allow cross examination or a thorough check of facts?

    Just asking…..

  • Handicapper, it’s way too early to predict anything, the race is very dynamic. Of particular concern to some of the candidates is the possibility of indictments upending the entire field. As they say in politics, 2+ months is an eternity.

Judging by your flimsy argument, you are a Rogers fan. Good luck with that, I think the voters already know his price.

  • Jim Hellmold displayed poise and command of the issues. He represents the department in a positive light compared to the other candidates. During the debate, he said, “When I see troubles at other organizations, I don’t see opportunities for myself.” That was very insightful to define Mr. McDonnell and Mr. Rogers. Mr. McDonnell waited until Mr. Baca resigned before entering the race. He seems like an opportunists. If you remember, Mr. Rogers announced his candidacy within seconds of Baca’s resignation speech. I don’t believe that was good politics.

Mr. Olmsted is not a great speaker and can’t seem to get past discussing jail problems. Unfortunately for him, he’s a one issue candidate. The department is more than the jail problems. It might be hard for him to distance himself from the jail violence because he held two ranks during the problem years. Lastly, he needs to control his knee bouncing in the next debate. He didn’t come across as electable.

Mr. Tanaka is a interesting candidate. I don’t think he has a chance, but he has powerful influence over men. His supporters look somewhat goofy in those t-shirts. Weird.

This race is getting interesting with all the momentum shifts.

  • Why is Scott making changing the core values a priority? You would think he would have more important issues to try to solve/rectify.

  • LATBG- You’ve just contradicted every one of your previous posts with your “it’s way too early to predict anything, the race is very dynamic” comment. So much for your prediction of a landslide victory by your boy Homestead. Tell him a bag of peas on his head might help with the thumping he received last night. As for Handicapper, it’s more like Handicapped, mentally. Interesting to see Rogers throw in the towel. Starting to look like a Region II victory!! Street coppers leading street coppers. Can’t wait!!!!

  • Doing my job; you are an idiot. If Paul Tanaka was Jim Jones you would be laying dead on some air strip in Gardena. Dude! Really! Stop overdosing on the kool-aid and see the truth. Your heinous is responsible for many nefarious activities completely overshadowing any good he did in his career.

  • LATBG it is early and there could be some game changers. However I don’t think it is to early to talk about reality. Masse got 10% running in primary with others against Baca. He was a good guy taking on corrupt Leroy. Unless the jail abuse story heats up a lot in which Olmsted will likely get a lot of play, Olmsted will not get traction.

Rogers has a political base and a head start. Rogers will likely get 20,000 votes from Lakewood and 15,000 from Carson. He has name recognition in neighboring communities.

Tanaka has a similar dynamic with Gardena but as I have said, he has big negatives.

The shear size of LA and Long Beach give McDonnell, even though he is not a politician, a similar advantage.

Gomez will get half the Hispanic vote 15 to 17 percent.

Olmsted, Hellmold, and Lou are all at a disadvantage. Years of political activity, lots of free media and money give you name recognition. When Baca dropped out Olmsted lost his free media. For him it will come down to how much money he can raise.

  • Its not easy to stand up and tell your bosses “YOU ARE WRONG.” but if your moral compass is true you cannot go wrong. You might not ever get promoted you might even get retaliated against but at least your not going to lose face.

The posters on this site seem to be volunteers for their candidate hoping they will get a bump if they push their candidates name. If you do your due diligence and see the history of each candidate you can see who would be the best person to lead this department.

It is a monumental task to run a one of the largest police agencies in the world. I feel some comfort that we have John Scott guiding the ship. I thank him for that. I would not vote for the current command staff that are running. Voting for them would just continue the Paradox. They never stood up to the Baca locomotive that took the wrong track, and if anyone of them gets the Sheriffs position don’t you think they are not going to take care of each other?

As for the outsiders thinking they can run the LASD they just don’t have what it takes. Sure one was an LASD reserve. He never worked in custody or the courts division, he never had to fight in the jails surrounded by criminals. the same goes for the political opportunist.
That only leaves one that is eligible for my vote.

  • Handicapper, interesting points. 2006 was a vacuum of news, however, on Baca’s corruption as it related to that election. Fast forward to 2014, and his corruption taints Tanaka irreparably, Hellmold and Rogers to a lesser degree, and that is only based on current information in the news. Unfortunately for those two, there is more bad stuff to come out for them that casts them in a very negative, Bacaesque light. Not a single candidate is a household name, so earned media is going to have a larger sway than usual. That gives Tanaka and Olmsted an edge, but in different ways.

  • Perhaps Scott is redoing the core valves to remove integrity to do right and fight wrongs and wisdom to apply common sense and fairness.
We have 12 deputies that committed  some criminal  acts that would have led to a firing in any other law enforcement agency.  Not LASD. We just give them a 30 day suspensions.  Are they humbled by getting to keep their job? No their appealing the 30 days next week  before the  civil service commission. Leadership not holding personnel to a high standard has caused the erosion of our organization.   We     continues  the tradition of admin  failing the good employees that  do serve the public with  respect and integrity and keeping the chuckle heads that don’t.

    http://civilservice.lacounty.gov/Portals/CSC/pdf/agenda26.pdf

  • Block got 38% of the vote against Baca and he was dead. The anti-Baca vote will be split between all the candidates with McDonnell, Gomez, and Olmsted benefiting the most. Those linked to Baca in some way will get Baca supporters.

People look for reasons to support their guy even in the face of scandal and in Block!s case his death. The Anti-Baca vote will not change much. Success is picking up votes from both camps. That means having enough money to get your positive message for change out. Olmsted is still seen as the whistleblower and that is about it. To make the runoff, he needs to redefine his candidacy and broaden his base.

  • Time to Clean House: you clearly don’t understand the system. Are you even a department member?

The appeal requests you cite are just consent calendar entries to preserve the rights of those deputies by reserving spots later down the road for appeals, should that be necessary. In the mean time, the requests indicates that those appealing have been filed on/indicted, and the department has stopped their pay and benefits. The 30 days comes into play once their cases are adjudicated. The department then has 30 days to continue not paying them and take adverse action (termination, suspension, etc.) or return them to full pay status.

This isn’t an “integrity” issue with the department, it’s County Civil Service Code section 18.01A, which is standard practice for all county employees.

Slow your roll and quit downing the department without a shred of knowledge to back it up.

  • @Ithacaboomer: I enjoy reading everyone’s spin on various issues, but I’m a little confused about your statement “street coppers leading street coppers.” To whom are you referring. I hope you don’t think Tanaka or Hellmold deserve to be called “street cops.” Both spent minimal time actually working the streets.

On another note does it make anyone else curious that Hellmold attacks Olmsted so aggressively, but not Tanaka. Could it be that you don’t attack a person who’s BS you once condoned, and also has dirt on you!

  • Oh please GPA_UTL , I  understand the system quite well as a department member. I know unlike you I  want LASD to return to greatness.

    GPA_UTL Says:

@15, You, sir, are right on the money. I’m embarrassed and ashamed that the whiners who may or may not be department insiders come to this liberal “social justice” site to rag on LASD. For the ones who say they’re “proud old retirees,” let’s have a dose of reality, okay?
In “your day,” you kicked ass and forgot to take names. You were ten times as bad as the kids working CJ in the last decade. What they did is playtime compared to your era. Go ahead and deny it; you’d be lying through your teeth.
And go ahead and whine about the people hiring on today, because in your time 30+ years ago, there were no polygraphs, and psychs weren’t even given to all applicants. Yes, they got phased in and eventually new applicants all took them. The point is, you “old timers” could have dropped off a truckload of cocaine before meeting with your background investigator, tell him you’ve never ever seen drugs, and gotten away with it. Glass houses, gentlemen, glass houses.
@14, if you’re a deputy, please choke yourself. You can’t wait for more indictments? Holy cow, sir. Words can’t even express the contempt I feel for you and the sadness I feel for the young deps who were already indicted and their families.

  • @Huh- Thank you for allowing me to clarify my statement. First off I don’t know much about Hellmold’s or Tanaka’s patrol tenure or abilities. Most of my knowledge in that area comes from reading this forum so I’d hardly call myself an expert. But I don’t see a correlation between quality “street coppers” and tenure in patrol. I remember some deputies being stuck there for decades, many not by choice. They weren’t exactly balls of fire. In fact, it seems to me most of the quality deputies were selected for coveted assignments if fairly short order. Am I the only one who recalls that?

  • @Ithaca- Again you reveal more than you know. There was a time on THIS department when you did a few years in the car AFTER training, then became a T/O, or a station special team, then you moved on.
When Mr. T implemented the takeover plan some 7 or 8 yrs ago (allegedly), then things changed. Shorter time to T/O, shorter time to coveted spots.
Now we are trying to mend the damage caused by the one year T/O’s who taught more shortcuts without teaching how to be a deputy.
Believe it or not staying in patrol for a few years usually makes one a better cop. I have known several deputies that stayed in the car for more than ten, having fun. The Sheriff even recognized those with the Legendary Lawmen awards.
How many Sergeants in patrol had less than 5 years in a car? How much do they really know? So give me a supervisor or a leader who has done the job, the ENTIRE job. Not some slick talking political person who only aspires to be the Sheriff at all costs.

  • Voters Beware……Tanaka is a manipulator who if you support his Mayoral Campaign and his Sheriff’s Campaign with contributions you are rewarded with promotion and you get a coin to be a life long member of his secret society and agenda. Look at his contribution lists for Mayor of Gardena…public information…..a lot of department people were on that list who gained favor…..Residents of Los Angeles County do you want a Sheriff who is manipulated by deputies and wears a Viking Tatttoo or someone neutral and objective that puts the citizens of Los Angeles County first. Vote Mcdonnell and get someone in here with a fresh outside perspective and not a good old boy. Also beware of Olmsted….I worked at county jail and he turned a blind eye to a lot of the issues because he wanted to be Commander so bad. He retires and then finds his voice.

  • Gmanwhistle, funny how Olmsted’s campaign picks up steam and out comes the usual smear campaign. Judging by your posting you haven’t been paying attention to the campaign that well, other than the fact your hero McDonnell is now conveniently in it after Baca quit.

Olmsted was very much trying to clean up MCJ from within but ran into a wall of opposition from the Tanaka clown car. Same thing happened to Clark before him. Olmsted took it a step further and went to the feds and testified before the CCJV, all while NOT running for office! If you got specifics, cough them up.

McDonnell’s famous “fresh” perspective is nothing more than amateur hour at the taxpayer’s expense. We need a sheriff who can hit the ground running, not a slick politician looking to add another notch to his belt. At best all he’s done is say exactly what Olmsted already proposed long ago. Just because you can race in NASCAR doesn’t mean you’re going to take the pole in Monte Carlo’s Formula 1.

I tell you what, there will be a runoff, so most likely it will be between McDonnell and Olmsted. Let the best plan win…

  • LATBG wake up…..Supervisor Yaroslavski and Knabe have come on board publicly with their support of Mcdonell……looks like the Mayor of Los Angles has his back along with the D.A.’s office. Other high ranking politicians will soon follow. Do the math of the districts these politicians have influence over and it’s clear what L.A. County wants. Here’s some advice, when Olmsted doesn’t make the cut, join forces with Mcdonell and make a difference and don’t be a sore loser. Oh and by the way it wasn’t Olmsted but Captain Clark who tried to make the changes, your boy Olmsted was to be busy keeping a low profile so he would be Commander.

  • Gmanwhistle, just like I thought all hat and no cattle. That same political establishment that wants to anoint McDonnell as the second coming of Jesus is the very same one that endorsed Baca year after year. How did that work out for them?

Specifically, the DA’s past and present (Cooley and Lacey), and the Board of Supervisors had been warned repeatedly of all the shenanigans perpetuated by the Baca/Tanaka crowd, and they refused to address it. They lost credibility and became part of the problem. Hence, they are NOT part of the solution, and have little ability to influence voters.
