Son of Riverside Chief of Police Sergio Diaz is Found Dead

The son of Riverside Chief of Police, Sergio Diaz
(formerly a Deputy Chief of the LAPD) was found dead in his home in Downey on Tuesday morning. When Gilbert Diaz, 37, was found unresponsive in his bedroom, paramedics were called, according to the Press Enterprise, but Diaz could not be revived.

As of Wednesday, the cause of his death was still unknown, said Riverside Assistant Chief Chris Vicino.

The younger Diaz had been suffering from flu-like symptoms, but nothing so serious that his illness worried his family.

When I heard the news, I was particularly heartbroken in his behalf, in that I know Sergio to be an exceptionally and happily devoted father to his kids—his son, and his two daughters, the latter both younger than their brother Gilbert. The thought of him losing a kid, in this case a grown kid, felt entirely unthinkable.

As it happens, Chief Diaz spent a great deal of time in the past few weeks comforting the family of murdered Riverside Officer Ryan Bonaminio, who was killed following a routine traffic stop on November 7.

Colleagues in the Riverside PD say that they hope to comfort and look after their chief, as he has always comforted others.

  • New strains of flu like viruses are stunning even the medical industry. The timing of these viruses seems to coincide with the bizarre climate changes we’ve been seeing world wide. Who knows what causes climate change? Everyone has strong opinions about it because obviously the discussion has made its way into the political arena, with Democrats clearly on one side and Republicans clearly on the other. But let’s say these climate changes and strains of viruses are a product of global warming, wouldn’t it be ironic that a police chief, who’s spent his entire adult life believing that violent crime was the biggest threat to his life, his family’s lives, and the lives of the citizens he serves, loses his very own son to the effects of global warming?

  • Mr. Rios you are a complete and thorough lunatic. Why not let Sergio and his family grieve in this time of grave sadness for him and his family. This is not the time or the forum to bring up your wacky left wing political rants.

  • I’m a lunatic?

Let’s see, how did he die again?

    Of a virus…at age 37.

As far as we know, he did not have cancer, HIV/AIDS, any immune deficiency.

Possible he was diabetic and obese, and that could have played a role. But even that’s doubtful.

From what we know, he just got sick and died, and it’s been happening a lot in recent years to otherwise healthy, young people.

These new, devastating viruses coincide with climate change. I think it’s a fair point to bring up.

As far as showing respect, there are several blog entries at this site having to do with people who’ve died, and people discuss the possible causes of death, all of the time. Why should it be spared in this case? I don’t know this man personally. He’s the son of a police chief, in a suburb of the 3rd biggest metropolitan area in the country. He’s a public figure. I don’t see it as being disrespectful at all. For what it’s worth, I send my condolences to his family.

  • Just like many want the death penalty so that we won’t have another Lily Burke, I want climate change to be addressed so we don’t have another Gilbert Diaz.

  • This below line shows you’re a liar. You posted it to take a shot at his cop dad, or me, and you know it. You had no real reason to post on this except for your hatred of cops which consumes so many of your posts here.

“..wouldn’t it be ironic that a police chief, who’s spent his entire adult life believing that violent crime was the biggest threat to his life, his family’s lives, and the lives of the citizens he serves, loses his very own son to the effects of global warming?”

Lacking any morals that most people have and being called on it you resort to your usual half-wit spin.

    You’re not fooling anyone.

  • “Mr. Rios you are a complete and thorough lunatic.”

I guess name calling is OK when it’s a Fact. Joe Rios aka SNS is know to live a miserable existence in his mother’s basement in Sacramento. Which probably accounts for his hatred of so much of America.

  • No, WTF, name calling isn’t okay. And, quite honestly, I shouldn’t have gotten into it.

But here’s the deal: When anyone loses their kid, it is not the time to make a political point—whether that point is righteous or not. I say this as a mother; no wound can possibly be greater. None. So, please, just wait a few minutes.

In this case, the person who lost a child is a good friend, thus I am particularly protective.

  • Well said Celeste, but I would add Rob’s motives were clear based on his posting history. I believe his only thought was to attack law enforcement. Disguising it as some type of political point didn’t work.

  • Im a member of the family and the comments of Mr.Rios are disrespectful. Mr.Rios you no buisness make political rants at this time because the death just happened and as you said ” I don’t know this man personally.”

  • My thoughts and prayers are with the Diaz family as well as their extended family at the Riverside Police Department. The cause of this young man’s death is not relevent when it comes to the grief of his family and, most of all his parents and siblings. As a mother who has lost a 19 year old daughter, I know the pain – actual physical pain – that the Chief and his family are going through. I also extend my thoughts and prayers to the family of Officer Bonaminio. The only thing we should offer these two families and other families is our love, support and prayers.

  • What goes around comes around? Corruption. What I mean is that the chief has some of his underdogs acting in corruption, so his son deserves this corruption. The karma of death.

  • What kind of corruption? Because I can name plenty myself. They seem to think they are above the law. No wonder San bernadino County is named one of the most dangerous cities in America.
