  • Aren’t new police chiefs generally the friends of other city politicians? How do you even put your name in the pool of candidates for that position?

  • Joe, as you probably know, anyone can apply. I don’t think Bratton was particularly friends with anyone. On the other hand, he was a superstar in law enforcement.

The prospective chief’s ability to work with the city council et al, is taken into account and in the end the mayor pick’s the chief from the group of three that he is given by the police commission. The commission picks its three out of the field of six or so chosen by the city’s personnel manager, who administers the recruitment process and recommends at least a half dozen candidates for the Police Commission to interview.

The idea is that the personnel manager is fairly neutral and free of political pulls and pushes, but human nature being what it is…. a pure and divine state of absolute objectivity is unlikely. Yet, I know the personnel manager’s group works to be fair minded.

Yet I would LOVE to be in the corner watching quietly when those six are chosen.

  • Celeste great to remind everyone about meetings. However, how can you voice your opinion on a candidate if you don’t even know if they will make the vetting process or be a final contender after the Personnel Committee reviews all applications. Another one has been added. September 17th, 6:30 pm, at the Kedren Center, 710 East 111th Place, Los Angeles. This is not a popularity contest and definitely not about race. We won’t get another Bratton who has turned around a deteroriating dept. but we’ll see. After vetting and reviewing in early October, 6 finalists will be forwarded to the police commission. A lot of people don’t really know the backgrounds of a lot of the candidates as they work mainly with their local stations and SLO’s and occassionally see their captains at meetings. I hope this doesn’t turn into a 3 ring circus and the politicans don’t get involved. Seems they can’t figure out how to fix our city”s problems and always tried to intrude on Bratton’s turf constantly.

  • Good points, Janet. I think they’re less interested in views on individual candidates at this point, as there’s been no vetting, as yet. And just want some notion of what community concerns are at play. I don’t know how seriously these meetings will be taken or if it’s all for show. But I’m planning to attend one, at least, just to see what the whole thing looks like.

  • We need Sheriff Joe Arpaio, in Mayor VillaBaboso’s illegal alien sanctuary and resultant gang capital of the world.

  • My ideal choices are between:

    1 – The City of Montebello’s ex-Chief Garry Couso-Vasquez(ex-LAPD).
2 – Montebello School District Superintendent and District School Chief – Edward Velasquez.
3 – LAPD Lt. Danny Bunch – currently in charge of Metro SWAT (he’s the man!).

  • The real jackass, seems to be our multiple personality shape shifting anonymouse troll, what do you think Sr. Gust?
