Nicole Bershon is the new Inspector General

As I had suspected (and hoped), the new LAPD Inspector
General is Assistant IG, Nicole Bershon. Her selection was announced by the Police Commission on Wednesday afternoon.

Since then, the news of her appointment has been getting applause from all quarters.

“Her unique qualifications will ensure the LAPD continues to be held to the highest standards of integrity and service,” said the mayor in his official statement.

Police Commission Prez John Mack said that Bershon will ensure “…21st century policing, transparency andaccountability at the LAPD.”

Bershon was in private practice in her first years out of law school. After that she went to work at the city attorney’s office, where she served for six years.

She joined the IG’s office in 2002 and has been heading its Complaint Intake and Review Section.

She also oversaw the Special Projects Unit-–which meant, among other assignments, she headed the OIG’s Review of the LAPD’s investigation of the infamous May Day melee incident.

Bruce Riordan, the Chief of the Gang Division for the LA City Attorney’s office—and thus in a good position to know Bershon’s work—told me this in an email:

“The position of Inspector General is a critical one for both the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD. I have worked with Nicole Bershon and she is a person of the highest integrity and a lawyer of the highest caliber. With Nicole as IG, the City of Los Angeles can be assured that the standard of excellence set by Andre Birotte will continue.”

Go, Nicole!
