When one listens to a lot of politicians and lawmakers, both local and national officeholders, one finds oneself noticing that—aside from their politics (with which one might agree or disagree)— their thinking isn’t all that….well….clear. They are short on the ability to follow logic. They are ill informed. And some of them, while not stupid exactly, are not going to score off anybody else’s charts intellectually.
That is never the issue with Edmund G. Brown Jr.-–otherwise known as Jerry.
Agree with him or don’t, but Brown is inevitably fun to talk with because he enjoys following a thought down any kind of challenging intellectual pathway—his own or yours—if you offer one in the course of a conversation or interview.
He reads maniacally, and he’s genuinely curious. And he knows how to think, which is, after all, a skill, and a rarer one, it seems, in all professions, than would be ideal.
This doesn’t mean Jerry Brown would be the best governor for this moment in California’s history—although he also might be.
I’m simply pointing out that Jerry is very, very smart. I cannot listen to him without being reminded of that fact. And, all things being equal, in my book, smarter is better.
Go Jerry Go! You hit it just right – Jerry can think, and more importantly lead.
The worst of all possible canidates at this time Celeste, vote for Brown and destroy the economy even more in California.
I don’t agree with you, Sure Fire—for a variety of reasons, among them the fact that EGB’s been cultivating his inner centrist for quite some time.
Also, I think Schwarzenegger knew, to a great degree, what it would have taken to balance the budget, but he was overmatched as an executive. He couldn’t manage to get the democrats or the republicans to cooperate, and he got whiplashed by several fo the unions. So, in the end, he was lousy at doing much of the job for which he was elected, which was too bad.
Jerry has a bone-deep understanding of politics and what it takes to get things done. And his outlook is far more mature than it used to be. (Personally, I think it would have helped if he’d gotten married years ago. But that’s a whole other topic.)
If the race comes down to Whitman and Brown, which it likely will, the debates will be fabulously interesting to watch.
We can argue about it all then.
You give this idiot way to much credit Celeste, but hell I’m just a “Neanderthal” according to him.
Read the link, his love affair with AB32 is something that muct be brought into every debate he and Whitman (imo) have as this a job killer and will lead to more companies leaving the state.
Briliant, just what we need.

lol. Fuckin’ Sure Fire, man. Here you have the most cop friendly Democrat this side of Zell Miller, and he’s still too much of a pinko for SF. Life’s full of give and take, SF. Suck it up. Especially since a decade of Jerry as gov would ensure you and your fellow officers a beach house in Maui as part of your pension. Are you and your Aryan Brotherhood neighbor trying to open up a baseball card shop you’re afraid Jerry will tax, or something? The only place you’re ever going to earn the 250k/year + that Jerry would likely raise taxes on is on the police force, SF. You are not going to make that in the private sector, so don’t worry. You don’t have the business savvy, and you definitely don’t have the people skills.
Sure Fire, if Whitman wins, you guys will be screwed. Watch. She’ll take care of the brass and leave the rank and file cops with shit. You coppers had better drop your economic ideals and start getting behind “tough on crime” Democrats. They’re your only prayer.
You’re a bit on the selfish side Rob. I’m looking at the big picture right now for California, not my own wallet, and it’s sad. As it is my entire family is looking at relocating out of state, including in-laws, kids the whole group. If that happens I stop working, but right now I’m paid well and quite content, and not hurting at all.
This state though is in a world of hurt and the most important thing we can do is create more jobs by being business friendly, Brown isn’t. Now claim he is and show everyone how bright you are.
I don’t hate everything about Brown, he’s just the wrong man at the wrong time. Staying with your penchant for being a liar doesn’t win you debates Rob. Didn’t say your boy was a “pinko” and tax wise I already got bent over by Obama this year. I did retire as brass Rob. Do you think I took a pay cut after that?
You have people skills? Constantly making up shit to prove a point isn’t a skill when you keep getting busted doing it dude. It’s a detriment.
Well put Surefire, calm and able you were. Not responding to the sharp-tongues varlot was sublime in its downfield eloquence, like Jerry Rice. You transformed what was predestined to be a shitfest by your critic and made a viable debate. Bravo!
