When I got home late last night, instead of posting, I’m afraid I collapsed into a useless puddle of exhaustion And am at UCI all day today. But a couple of things before I go.
First, everyone in LA (or who who cares about LA, or who once ever even vaguely drove through LA on their way to Las Vegas) must, of course, listen to the interview with outgoing chief, Bill Bratton, by Stephen Colbert.
Colbert asked: How hard was it to transition from one police stereotype in one city to another police stereotype in another city?
Bratton didn’t miss a beat: “From Jack Webb in Los Angeles to Andy Sipowetz in New York…?”
Anyway, it’s short and fun to watch. (McGruff the Crime Dog is mentioned)
Colbert: Why don’t you just become chief of police everywhere?
Bratton: “That’s what I’m trying to do with my new job.”
Speaking of new jobs, on Thursday, our new, nearly-chief-of-police Charlie Beck was on Patt Morrison’s show.
It’s a lovely interview. He sounds excellent. Beck talks again about how he will be “roots up” not “top down.” Bratton brought a lot of change to the department.
“Now it’s time to move those changes deeper down in the organization.” Yep. All true.
But much more—too much for me to randomly quote here and do it justice. Just listen.
But, while we’re on the subject, why is he still our new not-quite chief? Why in the world can’t the city council just confirm him over lunch today?
ONE MORE THING…. Kevin Roderick’s LA Observed segment on KCRW airs this afternoon. It isn’t up yet, but check back later as he’s going to be talking about Charlie Beck.
(How do I know this? A. Because Kevin’s a pal, and B. because called me for a Beck-related chat on Thursday.)
The other Beck…channeled by Jon Stewart

I know it’s off-topic, but it’s hilarious and the centerpiece of your post is an interview by Colbert, so…
Reg,
I haven’t listened to it yet. I’m saving it until I get home tonight. But even my son called me this morning to tell me I HAD to listen to Stewart’s Glenn Beck monologue. (I’m going to resist the temptation to do so now.)
How did Bratton improve race relations? And, have race relations in Los Angeles in fact improved? Have we had all delegations, of all economic classes, concur with this conclusion that race relations have improved in Los Angeles? Or, is that simply not necessary when a white LAPD officer says it’s so?
^^^ Poppycock^^^
Of course you’re not the “Browne” from the LA Eastside blog, and I shouldn’t respond to trolls, but I’ll play along.
A great deal of young Latinos on the East Side and elsewhere in Los Angeles actually do enjoy rap music. And soul food. Am I to believe that Latinos only bbq chorizo and carne asada? NEVER a rack of ribs with Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce?
A little off topic, but Cesar Chavez himself actually endorsed the idea of renaming the San Jose, California thoroughfare named after him to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. years back. “King and Story” is the time tested name of the intersection where lowriders used to cruise in San Jose. The now “King” blvd, btw, goes right through the neighborhood Chavez grew up in. A little of topic but since your point is that blacks and Latinos hate each other, thought I’d throw it in.
Taco trucks don’t need to sell soul food. Plenty of black people buy Mexican food from them. Every black person I’ve met from LA has their favorite Taqueria they grew up on.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Avenues gang has had black members. Plenty of Latino Los Angeles gangs, who work under the openly racist against blacks-Mexican Mafia prison gang, ironically have black members. Wasn’t 18th street notorious for recruiting black members? Look up photographer Joe Rodriguez’s photo essay about East Side Latino gangs. He chronicles a black member of the Latino “Evergreen” gang, in Boyle Heights. Most of the gang beef between blacks and Latinos is via pressure from the Mexican Mafia. The Mexican Mafia is racist against blacks, that I’ll give you. They’re a prison gang. Prisons are divided amongst racial lines. Nobody expects prisoners to hold hands and sing we are the world anytime soon. Latino gangs in Los Angeles, however, do not necessarily have beef with blacks. Some do, most don’t.
I’m not even going to address your insinuation that Mexicans don’t listen to motown. How fucking stupid.
I haven’t been to MacArthur park area in sometime. But since you bring up interracial couples, I should say that I did see a black man and a Latina woman just a couple of years ago walking hand in hand right at the intersection of Ave 43 and Figueroa, right by the Jack n the box. Isn’t this supposed to be ground zero of black/brown violence, according to the Tony Rafaels and Chris Blatchfords?
There are white racist gangs on the West Side. Haven’t parts of Venice historically been skinhead haunts? I’m not going to use a film as factual data, but didn’t the producers of American History X base their story on real life racial tensions in Venice? If I’m not mistaken, the Venice Suicidals are a racist, skin head gang, are they not?
The above comment, btw, was directed at someone who fraudulently posted under the name “Browne”, a regular blogger at LA Eastside.com, made a bunch of sarcastic comments insinuating that racist Mexicans are a bigger threat to black people than racist white people, and whose comment has since been removed, so it appears. I didn’t just go on that rant unprovoked. LOL.
Rob,
I didn’t see your response when I deleted the comment.
But I appreciate you flagging post that used a name close to Browne’s.
I will be deleting all comments in the future that use someone else’s name—or a deliberately close permutation, as this one was.
(Unless it’s posting using the name of a famous person, for humor’s sake.)
Sometimes it takes me a while, as it did today. And I may miss a few. But eventually I’ll get to most of them.
It is a loathsome habit some people have gotten into.
Imagine that, the resident snitch flagging cooments.
Celeste,
You’re preaching to the choir. Rob has many alias’s himself and plays the same game.
Rata, I realize the person I’ve just again deleted is far from the only commenter who has done this in the past. (And there are still some serial shape shifters.)
Most of the rest, however (yourself included), have pretty much stopped using the names of other people, and are just coming and commenting, which I appreciate. Yet couple have been persisting, of late, with the Tony Rafael, stuff, and then the permutations on Browne’s name.
In any case, I’m trying to really discourage it. I realize I’ll miss some since people have variable IP’s and frankly I’m too busy to keep track of every comment. But I’m doing what I can.
Thanks.
Celeste, thank you for doing what you can to keep this blog informative and free of disruption.
Ms. Fremon,
Why haven’t you touched on the LA Times’s story on dirty Sharon Harper, aka “the Witch”, and her ex-sheriff big wig husband – the politically connected money hungry backdoor dealer asshole – Jerry.
If the media or press would just press a little harder and ask all the right questions, certain county supervisors will end up having to be impeached.
If only the newsmedia knew what goes on behind LA county Supervisor’s close doors, it would be a devastating reality of American big city corruption and a slap to the democratic process of U.S. political system of government.
P.
I’ll take a look. I admit I’ve not focused on it at all. But I’ll check it out over the weekend.
Thanks for the heads up.
Ms. Fremon –
Just to give you a starting point on your inquiry on the dirty Harpers.
Look back at the last Sheriff election between Chief Block & Baca. Certain County Supervisors were adamant with their overzealous fight to make the Sheriff’s position a county appointed position and abolish the traditional county wide Sheriff elections.
Certain County Supervisors were on the sideline, ready to underhand and have total political control of the Sheriff’s office.
Who do you do you think the County Supervisors were going to appoint as their ass kissing Chief? That’s right – Dirty Jerry Harper.
As you can see, Jerry got shafted but his wife got a nice position and an incredible sweet deal salary (as always promised). But wait, there is so much more….but I’ll let you dig it up.
The worst part of all this is how a certain County Supervisor (cough..cough… loud mouth pit bull face four eye Gloria Molina) can show her face and make lying statements to the public and the media. She is to blame for the entire fiasco and still has the nerve to act like she knew nothing of Harper’s inner movements.
Man, you whine a lot, pop locker. I used to think you were a cop but not with all of that whining. They would have fragged you by now.
and by the way—— Venice suicidals are not a racist gang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are one of the only multi race gangs! and they are proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
