It’s SoCal Journalism Awards season at the LA Press Club. And the gala during which the winners will be announced is taking place at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23.

And….WitnessLA is a finalist in two categories!

First, in the category of Health Reporting, WLA Assistant Editor Taylor Walker is a finalist for her essential multi-part series “Punishing Families: The Need To Reimagine Child Welfare In LA County, which investigates the racial and economic disparities in Los Angeles County’s child welfare system, and the impact that family surveillance and separation has on kids and their parents.

The series shares stories of families torn apart over drugs and mental health challenges in the areas of the county most prone to family separation.

Then, in the category of Non-Political Commentary stellar researcher and columnist, Chandra Bozelko, has been named a finalist for her terrific story for WitnessLA, about the problems with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), which turned 20 last year.

As we mentioned above, the winners will be announced on Sunday evening, June 23.

So keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned.
