UNAMERICAN: The Politics of Any Means to An End

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen> name="allowFullScreen" value="true">

“We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis,”
said top McCain spokesman, Greg Stimple, in the Washington Post on Saturday, “and getting back to discussing”……

…..William Ayers.
Meanwhile, the Dow has dropped 734 points as I type. (UPDATE, it came up and closed with a 369.88 point drop.) And on Friday, the day that the bad-novel-sized bail out package passed, it was announced that the United States lost another 159,000 American jobs in September alone.

The ugly new route that McCain, his surrogates,
and his high-heeled, how-low-can-you-go running mate have decided to travel, does not just represent down-and-dirty-politics-as-usual, it is unpatriotic in the truest sense of the word.

More specifically, at a time when we are in a true and very scary crisis, McFaust and WinkyGirl are actively and consciously putting the health and well being of this country a distant second to their own ambitions.

Here’s a clip from Joe Klien’s online column at Time.com today.

Their strategy is simple: you throw crap against a wall and then giggle as the media try to analyze the putresence in a way that conveys a sense of balance: “Well, it is bull-pucky, but the splatter pattern is interesting…” which, of course, only serves to get your perverse message out. I really don’t want to be a part of that. But…every so often, we journalists have a duty to remind readers just how dingy the McCain campaign, and its right-wing acolytes in the media (I’m looking at you, Sean Hannity) have become–especially in their efforts to divert public attention from the economic crisis we’re facing.

(As Klien points out the whole Ayers thing is particularly rich coming from Palin, “who is married to a man who belonged to a political party–the Alaskan Independence Party–that wanted to secede from the union.”)

Do I think it will work? Not at all. The majority of the American people are far smarter and more decent than these the-end-justifies-the-means fools believe.

I think Josh Marshall has it right with his remarks this morning at TPM. “One interesting thing to consider is that we may be on the verge of seeing McCain not only lose the presidency but his entire reputation as well.”

That’s not dumpster dive one wants or expects from a war hero and a man who, we once saw (as politicians go anyway) as essentially honest and honorable.

When I first wrote the headline for this post, I accidently typed: UNAMERICAIN.

As you can see, I changed it.

But, upon reflection, I think perhaps I was right the first time.

  • Wait a second – I have had it with calling John McCain a “war hero”. I also strongly object when he says he “knows how to win a war”. He admits that he was a terrible pilot and just because a terrible pilot gets shot down doesn’t graduate him to “war hero” status. I know I know – he could have agreed to get out of the Hanoi Hilton and he didn’t. My hat is off to him for that. But he is not (was not) a war hero. AND he surely doesn’t know how to win a war. Show me the evidence.

  • I can think of a “war hero” from the left who shot a Vietnamese kid in the back, faked battle injuries to get out of Vietnam after only 2 1/2 months, came back to the States and accused his fellow soldiers of murder, went to Paris to offer encouragement to our enemy, and refuses to this day to sign Form 180 releasing his full service records to continue his concealment of a dishonorable discharge until reversed by Pres. Carter.

You sure have a different definition of hero than do I.

  • Mutt (rosedog) & Jeff: …he surely doesn’t know how to win a war.

This is from an Obama supporter? Maybe someone who supported Kerry? What do Democrats know about winning wars when they claim that we have already lost and want to “cut and run.”

You would rather elect a guy as Commander-in-Chief who has no military background, who refuses to admit that the surge was successful, and who accuses our soldiers of murder.

Yeah, Democrats know how to win wars…for the other side.

  • We’ve gotten pretty good at kicking your ass – and that’s with a young guy leading the charge who nobody even heard of five years ago. Whine away, asshole. And get used to being cast to the margins of political discourse.

  • The next debate is going to be fun. McCain’s fuse is very, very short these days. I’m gonna predict McCain comes out of the next debate losing an average of 4-5 points in the polls. Of course I could be wrong, but he doesn’t seem to have any cards left and is just running on mean and desperate.

  • Woody, When you voted for Bush you voted for a Commander In Chief who had no military background. So lets take that one off the table right now.

  • Woody didn’t vote for Bush…he voted against a communist takeover of the United States. Don’t blame him for Bush’s disasters – it was the best alternative at the time to an end to life on this planet as we’ve come to know and love it.

  • Woody’s not really for McCain either. Just saving us from certain death at the hands of the Muslims if Obama’s elected.

  • My suggestion for the next McCain ad if he really wants to win this thing:

Obama wants to take away your IPod!!!

  • Being shot at (or captured) by an enemy in combat does not magically confer special powers on an individual to call on 40 years later leading a major country. I personally don’t think John McCain is very bright; I am not convinced that he finished 5th from the bottom of his class due to drinking but instead maybe that was just about as good as he could do. He certainly has not demonstrated sound judgement in his professional choices. He is not a “maverick” – he is merely a knee-jerk hot head.

    That’s all.

  • Obama’s administration would take away the iPods of rich people and give them to the poor and middle class–in exchange for their votes, of course. The homeless have the option of booze.

Obama reminds me of the coming home scene in Doctor Zhivago when Yuri’s house was taken over by the government “for the people.” – “Yes, Comrade that is much more…fair.”

Maybe you guys need to read that book, but this time pull for the good guys.

  • Why You So Stupid Woody?

MY RESULT: Your Stupidity Like Earth – No One Knows Its Origins.

Your brain subject of great debate for generations. None of most brilliant ancient thinkers understand how you could get so stupid in such a short time. Now it up to you in interest of science to put end to debate. You must wander ends of earth in search of answer to why you so stupid.

You need time also with Dali Lama, play rock paper scissors and then Dali Lama will dance for you.

  • Peggy Noonan said that Palin did an effective job on Thursday night but one that amounted to a political infomercial.

  • Right…according to various sources–none of which are honest and accurate.

But, illegal immigrants should not be getting home loans in the U.S. at all, especially those guaranteed by FNMA, which I know that they do. But, it should be easier for Mexicans to afford the loans when sixteen people are living in the house and sharing the expenses.

  • I still find it strange that the Neo Cons won’t “de Friedenize” and admit that the economic policy’s of Raygun’s much loved trickle down theory aka supply side economics, and the naive belief that putting all trust in Capital and hokey Evangelists would lead us to the promised land of milk and honey, ending up at the feet of Bush, Cheney and Wall Street.
Oh no, somehow McSame is supposed to be different than the laissez faire Republicans of the past 30 years, and anyway the real issue is gay marriage or abortion or foreign terrorist’s.
Is there some sort of national amnesia and psychosis in play? I mean how could anyone want to give these guys another shot when the Republicans we have now are trying to steal the chinaware on their way out of the White House.

  • According to Woody, it’s the Mexicans fault! No original thought so Woody goes xenophobe and brings out the old reactionary ethnic generalization card.

Woody I understand times are tough and you can’t afford the lobotomy but you must have a tool shed, check it out, a hammer drill would work fine on your bonehead.

  • Thats your answer for everyone that dosn’t agree with you don q they are xenophobes, why the hypocrisy we all know how you feel about blacks.
