Much Potential for Dramatic Testimony at Friday’s Jail Commission Meeting – UPDATE

UPDATE;

TONIGHT’S PROMISED QUICKIE REPORT WILL APPEAR TOMORROW (SATURDAY)

I’ll have the quick take by midday Saturday afternoon. The full report is scheduled for Monday.

Back soon!

The Citizens Commission on Jail Violence is meeting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday
—today—-and the line-up of LASD people who are expected to testify at the all-day hearing is an interesting one. The “witnesses” include both working members of the department and one or two who are recently retired, all of whom, from what we hear, are in possession of lot of valuable knowledge of department’s problems. The ultimate effectiveness of their testimony depends, of course, on how much each person is willing to say.

Admittedly, it isn’t easy to give testimony to the commission and those who have agreed to be “witnesses” each seem to approach the experience with tremendous trepidation—but also with the hope that the commission will help the department toward reform.

THIS EVENING WE’LL GIVE YOU A SHORT REPORT on what goes on during the day,

AN EXTENDED REPORT is coming on Monday–which will include the much promised chapter on the testimony of former LASD Commander Bob Olmsted.

The Commission meeting takes place in the County Board of Supervisors’ Hearing room in Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration on Temple Street, downtown.

The last Friday of this month, July 27, Undersheriff Paul Tanaka and Sheriff Lee Baca are expected to testify at the public hearing.

In any case, back later today….. so stay tuned.

  • Question: Are witnesses sworn in and do they fall under the penalty of perjury? What folks don’t know is that Baca (first time in years) has been practicing his testimony and using what has already been said to defend himself. The Dog and Pony ( Baca and Tanaka) will definitely put on a show!

  • No they are not sworn in and cannot be cross examined so basically they can say whatever they want with no repercussions

  • #3 For starters, they are bound by department policy and must make truthful statements. What’s the penalty for that violation? Come on, you should know that. You sound just like the over ranked minions.

  • Well, they might not be sworn in, but say whatever they want with no repercussions?” Not the two current captains that testified yesterday. Those two could lose their job by being fired for lying. I doubt that ANYTHING they spoke of yesterday cannot be 100% verified by witnesses, documentation, etc. I seriously doubt they’d risk being fired and hurting their families.

  • We’ll just have to wait and see. All these things are crimes and I guess the DA is waiting to leave office and hand over this mess to his successor? Good questions for Lacy and Jackson on what would they do?

    Side note: Gil Carrillo got fired from SFPD. Did Baca urinate on him too?

  • Nomercy&gmab, No Mercy you just don’t get it. If it is their perception and not fact they can lie all day what is wrong with you. It’s maxwells word against tanaka. Maxwell knows nothing about jail policy. As for Bornman, he is very knowledgeable and correct when he states what he heard Cruz say in front of over a hundred witnesses. But what he failed to mention is that 70 percent of the cases he had to clean up while working for Cruz, actually occurred on Clark and Olmsteads watch. He was never asked the question. So was he lying? I think not, but he blames it on Cruz because Cruz was the operations Lieutenant. The Captain. Is accountable and Clark was no hero. Rotation, great concept move your problems all over the jail so they pollute others, real great solution. The idiots should have been booth bound until they hopefully get fired or demoted. And to answer the comment about over ranked minions. With 35 years on, I seriously doubt it. I am sure your career can’t match mine. I probably have more time in the locker room than you have in the job. Why throw digs at people, you don’t even know. I don’t know who you are nor do I care, but you really should rely on fact. If you know Bornman just ask him about my statement he will tell you it’s fact. Federal indictments keep waiting. Captain Abrams case I believe was overa year ago, have not seen anything yet. By the time an indictment falls I will be retired and you might be in patrol.
