NOTE: It’s impossible to select only seven John Lennon songs and feel good about it. After dithering over the videos posted below, I’m still dissatisfied. I’d have liked to put up Revolution, I Am the Walrus, Give Peace a Chance…and on and on (including Lennon’s wonderful cover of Ben E. King’s Stand by Me).
So what songs would y’all have put up?

We still miss you.
I love his comment that the thought of turning 40 really depressed him, but looking forward to 70 was just a lot of fun – he’d be curious to see who he’d turned out to be! So would we have. (As quoted by a journalist he talked with in ’88 on NPR today.)
I know this is blasphemous but I’ve always found Lennon’s music to be depressing. Just not into it. When it comes to the hippy era I’m much more into the folk artists like Dylan. “Desire” is one of my favorite albums ever. Scorsese’s use of “Well well well” in that graphic montage in The Departed kicked ass, though.
As far as what Lennon would be like today, what are most of the hugely popular ’60s artists like today? Most of them have pretty much sold out. He could have become a Republican for all anyone knows. I ask the same question of Tupac, and would love to believe that Tupac would have been the lone commercial hip hop artist to be conscientious while edgy. But it’s not likely. The post 9/11 music industry left no room for political voices.
Tupac is/was not a musician, Tupac just talked fast while playing electronic synthesized noise in the background. He died for being a dumb-ass just like so many other hip-hop noise makers.
Comparing John Lennon to Tupac is like comparing Vincent van Gogh to someone who paints “art” of dogs playing cards on a velvet canvas.
Here is Mariachi version of a Beatles song, real mexicans and their supporters love the Beatles. There are hundreds of beatles song performed by mexican artists, I read about it on The L.A. Eastide blog.

PS: Here’s one more great cover that Lennon did, this one from the so-called lost weekend album Pussy Cats with Harry Nilsson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgzWqfZo8fY
