Earthquake: 7.2 in Baja

In Topanga the motion was dizzying but gentle, like the memory of a rolling sea. Farther south it was 6.9. 7.2. Here’s the link.

It was 26 km—16 miles— SSW of Guadalupe Victoria in Baja.

In my second story living room, it was a rock ‘n’ roll thing—and unmistakable.

A good map.

At 4:15 there was a 5.1 about 1 mile from Imperial, CA., per USGS.

  • 20 miles down from what I heard and probably why it didn’t have the impact here it could have. Family friends in San Diego felt it big time. Northridge was 6.7 and 10 miles down, what difference that one was compared to this one. I was playing basketball at a nearby school and none of the players felt it but all the people watching did.

  • I just got an email from a friend in San Felipe BC, about 60 miles so. of the epicenter. It rocked the area pretty good and they are having a series of strong aftershocks. There is some damage in SF BC but how much is still to be determined. There is also a Tsunami warning for the Sea of Cortez.
Also talked to relatives in San Diego and was told dishes and houseplants fell over.

  • Some strong aftershocks are continuing in San Felipe and I was also told that before the big one (now said to be a 7.2) there were 4 or 5 small earthquakes today. I have been through a number of quakes in my life in LA but I can’t recall smaller earthquakes before the big one, it’s usually afterwards. Be careful all, I heard there was a small earthquake today in Malibu.

  • My Abuelita has an uncanny ability to predict earthquakes; my abuelita was warning us about this earthquake 15 minutes before our dogs sensed trouble. My abuelita told us all to relax the “Big-One” is not coming this year. When I get time I will share more of my abuelita’s stories and recipes with the rest of you.

  • FYI, email from a friend in San Felipe says that many US citizens who were in San Felipe for Easter are stuck. The road from SF to Mexicali has been shut down due to fissures and cracks, the road from SF to Ensenada has been damaged and closed to thru traffic, and the road from Mexicali to Tijuana (La Rumorosa) is closed.
Lots of damage in Mexicali, Calexico, El Centro.

  • This trend of earthquakes can not be brushed aside. And when you consider that they’re heading our way… It’s just too bad we spent so much money on useless things like the war on drugs. It’s going to hurt us when a huge earthquake hits. I’m glad all of those who profited off the war on drugs got their money. Hope they have a good time sipping mai tais on their perches overlooking the valleys when the rest of us are sifting through rubble.

  • It felt pretty strong here in San Diego. It was the longest I can recall. It just kept going and going and going….What gets to me about these “rolling” quakes (as opposed to the “jolt” ones) is that I start wondering whether it will ever end. So far they have.

  • Don Q, I can only imagine what it would have felt like on one of those cliffside roads in Baja. I’ve not been on the road from San Felipe to Ensenada that you mention, but that must have been some scary ride yesterday afternoon.

  • Celeste, regarding your comments being closed, it’s a mission accomplished for those who don’t like what you do.

  • Rob, I realize you were subject to attacks, but rather than ignore all the dumb stuff, you also continued the fight. On that last thread, it was just the three of you serial posting, and it simply drives everyone else away.

In the past, others have been guilty of the same thing but, with rare exceptions, most of those commenters have chilled, or nearly so.

I’ll open the comments up again later in the week once everyone has the time to cool down. If there are those who don’t, I’ll simply block them in the future.

I don’t want to be playground supervisor anymore. I really and truly do not have the time to wade through piles of vituperation to figure out who started what. So the comments section and I are taking a mental health break.

  • Three were serial posting? I don’t think so, it was two Rob and ATQ, they had over 80 of the 108 posts. Nice how you recognized Rob was subject to attacks but the whole conversation started south with his first small post which was an attack on me posted by him.

You’ve let Rob take over your board Celeste, congratulations.

  • Surefire, give me a break. I cannot tell you how unhelpful it is to be lectured by you, Rob—AND the others who’ve seen fit to tell me how I should run the blog these past few days.

It WAS three people, and you were not one of them. You actually have dialed it back a bit recently, which I appreciate.

It was indeed mostly Rob and ATQ. But then a semi-regular commenter who is now calling himself Bud, walked into the fray near the end and opened fire, thus spiking any shot at getting the first two to quit their serial posting mania. So three.

And I’m tired enough of this crap without additional lectures. They do not help matters, I assure you.

  • Whatever, by the way the crime speak which we can’t post on, you’re right about that. Way too early to tell and 4 murders in one crime make the numbers less than convincing.

  • Celeste, no problem. I was just bringing up the idea that shutting down this blog could very well be the goal of some of the people here who come to start fights. I’ll admit, I was bored yesterday and just exchanging blows with “Answering the Question”. However, after you gave us the warning yesterday, I avoided any kind of personal insults and tried to keep the exchange as upbeat as possible. Looking back on it, though, it’s not fair to other blog readers to have to sift though hundreds of comments to get to anything informative. I’ll refrain from it in the future.

  • Thanks, Rob. Much appreciated.

SureFire, I agree about the 6 person North Hollywood shooting with four deaths. It alone arguably skews in the numbers.

“Whatever,” isn’t quite the apology I was hoping for, but it will have to do.

  • Apologize for what, an opinion, wasn’t me that went crazy here? Thought you thinking 3 people were “serial posting” was odd considering I only saw 3 posts by Bud and over 80 by the other two. I understand your point, just don’t agree with it.

Trust me Celeste, I would love to do battle with you or anyone else here and keep it nice, if others resolve to do that I’d be on board.

  • Sure Fire, how does one “do battle” and “keep it nice” all at once? You’re asking a lot of yourself, aren’t you? The essence of battle is to play for keeps and do whatever it takes to win, making “nice” a near impossibility. Why do battle? Why not just have a conversation?

Anyway, Celeste, I’m going to cheat and comment on your most recent blog entry. Did the LAPD really say that the recent crime wave is thanks to the early inmate releases? You seem to have the same text attributed to both the La Opinion article and the LAPD union’s blog. Perhaps this was done in error? I checked the LAPD union’s blog and couldn’t find that text. But of course, they did attribute the crime wave to budget cuts.
