  • It’s going to take him more than one year to clean up Bush’s mess. My only problem with him in his first year is the way he’s bending over backward for this “bipartisanship”. Bill Maher had it right. He needs to be like Bush. It’s been a year, and I just can’t think of any dividends this effort to appease Republicans has brought back. They’ve given him nothing in return. The good thing is, he’s going to be a two term president. I look at all of the potential Republican candidates for ’12, and there isn’t one that can beat him. And unlike Democrats in Massachusetts, he won’t take any votes for granted. This guy brought us Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa, something Coakley couldn’t do if she gave out free x boxes.

  • It has been one year:

    1) He expanded the war by FIVE FOLD.
    2) 10 Million+ unemployed and growing (nearly 20% now).
    3) 14 Trillion in debt – equal to USA GDP.
    4) Not one single change to health-care.
    5) No change at Guantanamo
    6) The economy is ready to double dip.
    7) Big banks increased their bonuses 20% in 2009

  • Rob Thomas, Bush’s mess didn’t include cramming a healthcare bill through by giving special breaks to Louisiana, Kansas, and unions. People were reacting to things like that. Democrats will be blaming Bush fifty years from now. BTW, if it weren’t for FDR, we wouldn’t have to deal with a bigger central government and looming deficits in social security.

Also, Rob, although off topic, this might interest you: Magazine ranks Atlanta as America’s gayest city. You see what I have to put up with? Last night, I was at Borders bookstore in midtown, right next to Whole Foods and near the Homo Depot – real danger territory. Fortunately for me and others, no guy tried to hit on me. I don’t wear tight pants.

  • Any day now Barack Obama will be making changes to his staff. Rahm Emanuel has a rocket ship up his butt and its ready to go. Timothy Geitner too, has a stick of dynamite in his ass with the fuse lit, he’s ready to go too … And Conan O’brien has an M-80 in his pants too.

  • Pokey, I think Republicans have gotten away with murder on the budget deficit. Check out this timeline: http://www.sfgate.com/timeline/bailout/

Not only was the whole financial crisis and recession begun under the Bush admin, but a good deal of the money was doled out then as well. Additionally, the Bush administration inherited a surplus and grew the deficit every year. If the budget deficit is important to you, the Bush administration was absolutely the worst.

Since then, the Obama admin has increased the short term deficit applying Keynesian economic theory. Whether or not you agree with the efficacy of that approach, you’re going to have to give it a few years to see if it works and see if the Obama administration can decrease the deficit. If they can’t make progress over then next few years then it’s a fair criticism, but in the meantime I think you should cast your stones elsewhere.

Should there be a double-dip recession, the Obama admin will own that.

  • Also, on the budget deficit, last I checked many conservative “budget hawks” are still agitating for eliminating the estate tax and upset that the bush tax cuts are going to expire. What do you think, Pokey? Should we decrease revenues further or is the budget deficit more important?

It’s going to take him more than one year to clean up Bush’s mess.

The problem is he’s not doing what he promised to do during his first year, i.e. close G-Bay, bring the troops home (instead he up’s the ante in Afghanistan), and keep unemployment below 8%, and have the Healthcare debates on CSPAN so they would be transparent. He said he would do those things during his first year and he hasn’t delivered. Combine with that with the perception that his deals to get Healthcare passed were backroom shady deals. Then the bailouts of big business (GM) leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. He promised things he hasn’t delivered. That’s the problem. Bush isn’t the problem anymore, and it’s time democrats quit relying on that excuse. Even Warren Buffet is now coming out against his banking policies.
As long as democrats use the strategy to just keep blaming Bush, more and more people will become dissolusioned with the party.
Wake up and smell the coffee Rob.

  • Did Obama actually promise to do those things? Or did he say that he was going to try to do it? I don’t recall Obama promising anything. I’ve looked over some of the transcripts of his campaign speeches, debates, etc, and I just can’t find the words, “I promise”.

  • “hate the all” actually had a nice ring to it. Like “i hate the all of yous”. LOL. Tony Soprano.

  • On the other hand no matter what anyone thinks of Obama’s politics, it is so refreshing to have a dedicated family man and a couple who really love each other in the White House.

  • I agree. Edwards is a pig. And regardless of your politics, having a solid family in the white house is a strong and healthy thing for the moral health and well-being of the country. But I take exception to “refreshing”. The Bushes also exhibited a strong and solid marriage. You could argue that perhaps their kids were not as cute and wholesome, but of course, they were also not little girls either.

I wonder why Tiger Woods is so hated right now, when people in much higher and influential positions have done the same thing. We just love Bill Clinton, and it is rumored that he was with more than 5 women, just got caught with one. At least Woods has single-handedly raised millions for charity and will continue to do so. He still is wrong for what he did, but how about a little fairness here.

  • Rob, I believe he is a social path. He demonstrates no remorse, he is pathological liar, he is callous, manipulative and conning. What scares me, is he could of been our President. Each time he’s been confronted with any issues regarding this affair, he has denied them even in the face of evidence. You never know what people are capable of and that includes our politicians. Edward’s is a sicko and I thank God he was exposed before the political process made him a candidate to be President of our country. It makes me wonder how many other politicians fall into the same category as Edwards.

Those kids are emotionally damaged for life. He really is a dirtbag. Dirtbag such as described in a dicitionary.

He also is a Narcissist of the worst kind. His word and reputation will never be repaired, even if he has turned to religiion. He’s as fake as his fake “hair”.

    ……………

As a voter, you can consider anything you want when heading to the booth. But it’s still none of your business. Neither of the Edwards told you about it. The press found out about it, and reported it. It’s your right to vote based on personal issues of the candidate that have no effect on your life whatsoever. It’s how Bush got enough votes for the Supreme Court to make it look like he won in 2000. And it resulted in the worst 8 years in the post WW2 United States. So, obviously, it’s not the wisest way to vote. But we can’t stop you.

  • Celeste, I am a single man and I know I can’t be/don’t won’t to be monogamous. I enjoy life and the world and variety way too much. I will never marry. I will never lie before God and Man in a church and take vows.

To Edwards and other men who can’t be/don’t want to be monogamous: be true to yourself, for goodness sakes, and stop hurting other people.

I believe that marriage should, indeed, be until “death do you part.” I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I think it’s a great institution…just not for me.

    ………….

How did Edwards damage health care in his state? Do people not have the right to sue someone? Is someone was ruled against in a law suit, isn’t it their fault for doing wrong to begin with? You’re blaming the person who brought them to justice, instead? And here you were, Mr. Moral values with the marital thing. But people who call company’s out on wrong doing are a disruption?

  • John Kennedy was a democrap pig for cheating on Jackie over and over and over again. Let’s not forget Marilyn Monroe, she probably died of a broken heart from the Kennedy brothers using her and then throwing her to curb when they moved on to other women. And their father was a pig, too. Remember his affair w/Gloria Swanson????

  • My understanding is that Elenore Roosevelt was a lesbian, had partners, and was pleased that Franklin did, too. Mature working relationship. Honest!

  • Most Interesting Man in the World on bringing up nearly century old presidents to try to make the Democrats look immoral:

    “No.”

  • Are you kidding me Rob???? If he had any sense of shame, or any concern for the feelings of his wife and family, he wouldn’t have had the affair in the first place. I think that like most people who cheat (I don’t say just men, because women cheat as well – in fact, almost as often as men nowadays), the only thing he regrets is that he was caught.
Edwards – just another POS politician. These guys lie and lie and lie till they have no where to hide. Then they come clean falling on there knee’s and wetting their pants asking forgiveness and saying they will be good. BS.

  • So what? America is the land of infidelity? Point blank – especially among the rich, powerful, and famous. If it was ever possible to examine the lives of politicians, only a pitiful few would past the test of HONESTY and FAITHFULNESS!

  • Mrs. Salazar et al.
When will we get it in our heads, look at the evidence both scientific and anecdotal, and it’s quite plain to see that mankind is not meant to be monogamous for life, very few and I mean very few life forms are. Unless you are mega-unattractive, if you have repeated opportunity to cheat with someone you are attracted to you will. It’s nature calling. Yes you can have life long mates but very few are life long monogamous. If you’ve been married for 20 years and you are the one that cheated and got away with it you can feel a little relieved but chances are one of you have, but don’t feel too relieved because both of you may have.
    Everyone please chill out.

I’ve looked over some of the transcripts of his campaign speeches, debates, etc, and I just can’t find the words, “I promise”.

You’re kidding right? You’re not really attempting to split hairs like that are you? No politician actually uses the words ” I promise”. They use the words “I will”. Those are commonly referred to as campaign promises. You know it and I know it. In trying to defend Obama from not delivering you’re making yourself sound like some mindless Obama hack. He hasn’t delivered the things he said he would.
If you want to split hairs, then answer us this. He didn’t use the words “I’ll try” either. He said ” I will” and he hasn’t. No amount of hair splitting can change that. He made too many promises that he couldn’t (or in the case of the war didn’t intend to) keep. That’s the reality. Mince words however you like, it doesn’t change the facts. Now it looks like Healthcare is dead. It makes look like a failure. No way around it.

  • Hey, nice name, SNS. Imitation is the ultimate form of flattery. I rarely use that name anymore, so it’s all yours. Regarding Obama…how can he avoid being a celebrity? He’s the president. Was Bush not a celebrity? Did Bush not frequent ball games? Did he not take vacations, before and after 9/11? Every president’s a celebrity. I don’t see how you avoid it. And, as I’ve said before. If Obama’s not changing anything, what are all of these rabid right wing protesters crying about?

    Joining the fray,

the person I was responding to used the word “promise”, Obama sure as hell didn’t. I think “promises” is kind of a dramatic way to describe Obama’s platform. According to your definition, every single president has made promises they couldn’t keep. Trivia: Which president promised to “be a uniter, and not a divider”?

I think your criticism of Obama is fair. But where you get a little nutty is when you pretend Obama is exclusive from past presidents when it comes to what you define as promises. Read a little history.

  • Rob Thomas say’s:
I rarely use that name anymore, so it’s all yours.

    …………

First of all Rob, I wasn’t asking your permission to use that name. Second, why do you keep claiming this is your screen name when you sign off as Rob Thomas? If you want to sign off as SNS feel free. I’ll use a different name.

I never considered Bush a celebrity. Did you?
I never saw Bush on the David Letterman show. I don’t remember the media going crazy when Mrs.Bush got a hair cut or going bezerk over her outfits.
My point was, Obama should be busy putting all the “changes” he said he was going to make in place instaed of doing Letterman shows and being a celebrity. Be a president.

  • Trivia: Which president promised to “be a uniter, and not a divider”?

Uh…let me guess…must have been Bush??? Cuz that’s the only prez that Rob talks about as much as Obama.

  • Jane, according to your definition of a promise, Obama has not broken any at any higher rate than any previous president. And, I got Woody’s point. I just want to know why he won’t praise Obama for doing something he agrees with.

  • I don’t agree with Presidents making commitments to voters that they can’t keep. I don’t agree with Presidents keeping commitements to voters that they shouldn’t complete. I don’t like dishonest politicians. I’m not going to praise someone who lies and doesn’t have a clue as to how to run a nation.

  • I wasn’t reacting to Gitmo. I was reacting to Obama, only. My views on Gitmo are not relevant.

I don’t applaud Obama for the result, as it was only through his own ineptness that he failed to carry out his evil plan to make our country look stupid.
