Four New York Times Reporters Missing in Libya – UPDATED

The journalists are: Anthony Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner
and the paper’s Beirut bureau chief; Stephen Farrell, Stephen Farrell, a reporter and videographer who was kidnapped by the Taliban in 2009 and rescued by British commandos; and two photographers, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario.and two of the paper’s top photographers, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario.

The paper is in contact with the Libyan government to try and determine their whereabouts.

Will update.

Eerily—and scarily—the video above, uploaded by Euronews, was reported yesterday by Anthony Shadid, as was this NY Times story.

These are all fine journalists, but Anthony Shahid, in particular, is brilliant.

All prayers.

UPDATE:

Some speculation about the four, but nothing concrete. Since they usually are directed to check in with their editors multiple times a day, one assumes they are in some kind of captivity.

The WA PO’s story gives at least a bit of an update.

UPDATE – THURSDAY A.M.

NY Times exec. editor Bill Keller told the AP Thursday that there were unconfirmed reports that the journalists had been detained at a government checkpoint between Ajdabiya and Benghazi, a rebel stronghold.

On Monday, the day before the journalists disappeared, Anthony Shadid told his dad, Buddy Shadid, not to worry that they knew what they were doing.
