Great catch, Celeste. Theory of the first follower seems dead on. The narrator (Siver?) nailed several human inhibitions/defenses that have to be conquered in order to get traction. Getting the first person to stop and sign a petition for some cause, or getting the first person to volunteer, or make a small donation, etc. is always the toughest.
Excellent example of movement origins.
