As many Los Angeles residents and other WLA readers already know, three members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who are also members of the LASD’s Arson/Explosives Detail were killed early Friday morning in an explosion at the department’s well-known Biscailuz Training Facility located in East Los Angeles.
We’ll have more about this devastating story and other important stories over the weekend.
In the meantime, Sheriff Luna has declined to identify those who died until all family members can be notified. But Luna described them as “heroes” and “the best of the best.” The combination of the employees had served in the department for 74 years, according to the sheriff.
Luna said the catastrophe marked LASD’s worst loss of life in a single incident since 1857.
Several news sources reported that it appears the explosive that detonated had been brought back to the facility from a seemingly routine bomb squad callout and it was believed to have been inert when it exploded.
Mayor Karen Bass posted on X today that the City of L.A. is supporting the @LASDHQ through this horrific incident in Monterey Park. She noted that LAFD/ATF arson investigators and members of the LAPD bomb squad are assisting at the training facility.
“The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of those impacted by this blast,” Bass wrote.
More soon. But, in the meantime, LA County’s heart is broken by these shattering events.
Horrible incident! Hope the family’s the family’s the best dealing with thier losses
Tragic. My sympathy to their families, friends and the members of the LASD. The number of personnel that responded that day to honor them was touching and well deserved.
Rumor is Sheriff Luna has made the decision to promote and bring a new Chief into the Special Operations Division. The current A/Chief and Commander have destroyed morale within the division and are being criticized for the recent tragic deaths of three dedicated Arson investigators. The A/Chief is under criminal investigation for taking photos of the horrific Arson Explosives crime scene, but has yet to be relieved of duty. Under Luna’s administration, executives have and are not held to the same standard of other department personnel. SOD personnel have complained of both current commanders using personnel for non essential demonstrations and overtime events in order to highlight themselves and propel their own careers. Hopefully, the rumor is true and more change comes in the near future. It appears that the Boycott of Baker to Vegas for Trevor Kirk and the upcoming election have impacted the decision making of our leader. Unfortunately these decisions were reactive and will hurt him in the upcoming election. Will more change come? Will there be a boycott of Baker to Vegas 2026?
Sounds about right. Hide and deny, until someone gets hurt.
Geeez get a life all of u non LASD folks. Who cares about b2v boycott. And by the way the people of Los angels county elect the next sheriff not the deputies Los Angeles county residents don’t care if Kirk is innocent or if the sheriff is making LASD great again. It’s been a mess for the last 30 years.
