  • In the ’60s, up in Northern California, I had summer job as a seasonal firefighter with the California Division of Forestry, now called CalFire. An uncle had a similar job with the U.S. Forest Service in the Mendocino National Forest.
The winter rains always came in time to put out the fires, which mostly originated in the heat of the summer-time, and I could return to school to resume my studies.
The perfect summer job for a college student.
These fires, the deadliest ever, are occurring in the dead of winter.
    No more fire seasons.

  • Celeste, love to hear your current thoughts on the management of these fires, From Biden, Newsome, LAFD executives, Bass, etc.

  • Editor’s note:

Rakkasan, that’s a terrific job to have had.

Firewatch, I think there’ll plenty of people to comment on those issues. I’m writing about other things. Right this second, the story I’m working on is about the value of community when facing a rapidly moving, “unstoppable” wildfire.

Fire Marshall, thanks so much for reminding us to 60 Minutes. It was excellent.

    C.
