State Senator Gloria Romero has been the best and smartest lawmaker on criminal justice issues, but she will be termed out in 2010.
(See, now this is why term limits drive us crazy.)
She is, however, going to run for California State Superintendant of Public Instruction in 2010 and, yesterday, she took a big step toward that goal when she was named chair of the influential Senate Education Committee.
Gloria, if you’ll remember, was the first woman Senate Majority Leader in California history. But she decided to step down as Majority Leader on November 30, in anticipation of being named the Education Committee chair.
Blocked at every turn by law-and-order troglodytes when she attempted to push much-needed criminal justice reform, Romero decided to stop banging her head against that particular brick wall and, instead, “spend remainder of her term in the State Senate to focus on making significant reforms to California’s education system.”
(The “troglodytes” part of Romero’s decision is my thought, not hers, but someone who has been close to Romero in her criminal justice endeavors, told me she was just plain fed up with the irrational resistance she got at every turn.)
“Education is the civil rights issue of our time,” said Romero. “California will not be able to lead our nation and compete in the 21st Century global economy unless we close the achievement gap and extend educational access to all students.
She looks forward, she said, to helping the Governor “…address the state’s current fiscal challenges and create an education system that will allow all California students to learn and succeed.”
May it be so.
The great political and social justice battler Sen Gloria Romero has been one of the voices in the wilderness in the struggle against the big money and powerful Ca prison industry interests.
She is one of the loudest voices in opposition to the draconian and inhuman torture methods imposed on inmates suspected of being gang members. Years of sensory deprivation and isolation techniques such as those used on the subject of a previous post “Prison Glass”.
This disgusting conspiracy of moneyed interests, the prison guards union, the prison building and maintenance industry, the Ca Justice system, and as was seen recently in a solidarity of shame photo in the LA Times, Governors Dukmejian (now the top prison lobbyist), Wilson (Mr 3 Strikes), Brown (?), Gray Davis (a real lackey of prison guards and prison industry), and the Governator, all money changers and hypocrites in profiting off of human bondage and suffering.
And for all her efforts in prison reform Sen Romero is castigated and walled off, she was recently slimed by the mediocre and gutless “investigative reporter” Chris Blatchford in his ho hum book “The Black Hand” which is a journal from Rene Enriquez another prisoner who cracked and “debriefed” after years of isolation in the infamous SHU at Pelican Bay, and became nothing but a hollow puppet mouthing the party line of the prison industrial complex.
In the book Sen Romero was slandered and described as almost a made member of the Mexican Mafia who was trying to undo proven methods of successful incarceration techniques.
This gutless and disgusting paragraph by Blatchford in his “book”, slandering the efforts of Sen Romero.
“Steve Moore, assistant director of the CDC (Ca Dept of Corrections), Law Enforcement Investigations Unit, ordered Devan Hawkes not to look into Sen Romero or her aide Rocky Rushing and their possible relationship with La Eme. Moore felt that there wasn’t enough evidence warranting an investigation and in any event, that it was not the CDC’s place to investigate the person who oversaw the agency. He felt it should be up to the FBI or California Highway Patrol. They didn’t do it either.”
What a piece of shit from Blatchford and his cohorts and apologists for the Prison Industrial Complex. What a cop out after previous pages of insinuation and guilt by imagination.
I understand the frustration that Sen Romero feels with this kind of slime attack.
Senator Romero will go on to have a great career in Public service and one day when she has more juice I hope she will revisit the scandalous Ca Prison Industry.
When a liberal calls a conservative a troglodyte, then you know that the conservative must be doing and saying something right.
don quixote loves the mexican mafia, he personally knows three generations of them, he considers them his heros and noble aztec wariors he beleaves they have a valid code of ethics that put them above other criminals and he hates blacks.
Don Quixote/ roy multiple personality ruiner of many blogs, is apparently allowed to rant here even with the express blessing of Celeste, because his views seem to reflect hers. But his comments in #1 are so over-the-top crazy, it’s like he/ roy are challenging the readers and Celeste to see how much nonsense he can get away with because their game is finally found out.
That “moneyed interests” bla-bla inflict “inhuman torture” on “inmates suspected of being gangmembers” and only our heroine Gloria Romero stands ready to defend them, is clearly crazy. (The same Gloria Romero who bitterly fought Measure R/ the transit tax recently, along with colleague Gloria Molina, because it didn’t deliver enough in her opinion to the Eastside, which by the way is just getting a new, almost-completed rail-line that many residents fear will work TOO well and, horrors, “gentrify” the currently working-class Latino immigrant neighborhood. That tells us what her priorities would be as Supe of Education, Lord help us.)
Roy’s comment #3 is right-on — only a Mexican Mafia-loving nutcase who lionizes their “code of ethics” could say these things. With his ilk as Romero’s fervent supporter, no wonder she found no allies among those Celeste calls “trogladytes.”
First para, that was “before” (not because) their game is finally found out…
WBC, if you don’t agree with something I’ve posted then make an argument, post up something of interest instead of making personal accusations and comments that have no basis in fact, othewise you are making the case for yourself being the multiple personality nut job everyone suspects you of being.
Hmmmmmm?
Until you have something pertinent to add to the topic and take your head out of your ass, try running around the block a few times and take deep breaths, until then you only make yourself look foolish with your hypersensitivity, phobia’s, and manic disposition.
WBC, Don Quixote does not post under multiple pseudonyms. A couple of people here do. He is not one of them. Please trust that I know this. (None of that sort of thing is in the least hard to track through the back end.) I thought we’d put that one to rest.

they are based on fact don, your countless post idolizing the mexican mafia and spewing hate for blacks(although thats not the word you use to describe them).we have all seen them i could post them up here if you or celeste would like.
Roy, Let’s not bring in stuff from other sites. If DQ posted that stuff here, it would be different. But he hasn’t.
(For the record, I used to read In the Hat fairly regularly some years back when it was more active.)
Sorry, Celeste. It’s more than mere coincidence that whenever he posts one of the other aliases pops up right after to refute him. They’ve also demo’d how easy it is to phony up IP no’s. Your refusing to believe what every other blog knows doesn’t “put that one to rest” except w/ you. Witness roy/ #8 again as case in pt. (Do you honestly believe that a number of people live to monitor Don Q’s every post on every blog?) — That’s very diff’t from people using diff’t aliases to reflect diff’t themes, but don’t go around contradicting themselves in serial posts.
I don’t care what this person does but when some posts are as over-the-top as the first one that it needs to be challenged, I’m not going to pretend I’m dealing with a legit person just cuz you choose to. Certainly that’s your choice.
OK, now this is getting REALLY bizarre again. You’re honestly saying “roy” is a different person who hangs around all day just monitoring this and every blog to refute “Don Q?”
WBC, Challenge away. I’m not suggesting for a minute that you shouldn’t.
But about the multiple identities, I’m not talking about IP addesses, which are not necessarily static anyway. I can tell a different way.
I don’t pretent to be all that technically sophisticated, but this issue is something I had my tech pull apart thoroughly when it all got hot and heavy last spring.
i do apologize, and wbc i know what your talking about he does post under many names but i am not one of them.i read here daily i usually don’t post unless it something that gets me going. i just hate it when he calls people racist or defends gang members when he is a racist and a gang member.like i said i am here just about everyday and usually don’t post attacking anyone but its hard not to when he is a huge hypocrit but as long as he is not calling peole racist i won’t call him one.
Roy, your real cute for a lunatic, you call me a racist and pro gang member without any just cause and then pretend you are aren’t phobic and a crass reactionary who can’t help herself when I post something up.
Well kiss my Mexican ass twice.
Opps is that racist?
PS, Do you beat your wife?
WBC, gee whillikers it kind of looks like you and Roy are the evil twins from planet X.
whowouldathunkit
Roy, thanks for explaining the ID thing.
Lest we forget Celeste: Prohibition repeal turns 75 on Dec. 5  the official anniversary of repeal.
Booze is the answer!
I’ll drink to that.
Where is Santiago, Drinking with Tony, Mustang Sally, Biff, Jim and Conchita, when we need them to settle this multiple personality menudo menso debate?
Free all the poor victims of the robber baron gavachos who have forced the EME carnales to exist in those draconian industrial prison complexes !!!!!
This would never happen in our beloved paradise of mexico unless of course it’s by the gavcho europeans who settled in mexico and corrupted every honest indito !!!!!!
The above fracas’, donnybrooks, eww jesus (donnybrooks?) are what is known as “net-banging”, no? Anyway please cease all the fussing and fighting. Like Sam Cooke said: “A change is gonna come”. or Marvin Gaye with “What’s goin on?”.. People of the world join in , get on the Love Train, Love Train Love Train.
hey don, well you finally didn’t deny being a racist gangmember.
Donkey-HoTee should be more concerned with the mexicans victimizing mexicans and not WBC or Roy being phobic against the self proclaimed mexican spokesman.

Reporting from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico — Outside the gaily painted gates of the Elena Garro Federal Kindergarten, the grown-ups are afraid.
If daily drug-related killings haven’t sown enough alarm in this gritty border city, parents now confront written messages left near several schools warning of unspecified harm unless teachers hand over their annual year-end bonuses.

Don Quixote. Do you drink the kool aid? Do you cry like a baby about being persecuted then kill those who you disagree with? Blatchford’s book is a must read. As for your heroine? She takes money from the residents of East LA, gives them nothing, and is corrupt.
