It’s the second worst thing that can happen to a parent.
The very worst thing happened to the other boy’s parents.
The son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, 19-year-old Esteban Nunez, has been arrested along with three other boys, for the October stabbing death of a 22-year-old Mesa college student that took place near the ground of San Diego State. Each of the arrested boys faces one count of murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Fabian Nunez and his family are originally from San Diego.
This from the San Diego news channel 10 News.com:
The suspects allegedly got into a fight with Santos and four of his friends on 55th Street, just outside San Diego State University, about 2:15 a.m. Oct. 4.
During the fracas, Santos and several of his friends — all of whom had just left a house party in the area — were stabbed, after which the other group ran off. Santos died at the scene.
Investigators eventually were able to identify Garcia, Jett, Nunez and Thomas as the men who allegedly had attacked Santos and his friends, according to police.
And this from KABC:
“I hope that it’s not because people have clout, that they’re going to walk away. If these people did the crime they need to be punished and do their time,” says Kathy Santos.
Kathy and Fred Santos of Concord are the murder victim’s parents. They were told their son Luis was stabbed in the heart during a fight. Police say Luis, a Mesa College student, was walking with friends on the San Diego State campus when they stumbled upon Nunez and three of his friends.
“It is a random night. If these four men did not visit San Diego that weekend, my son would still be here for Christmas,” says Fred.
“Who dies first,” Father Greg Boyle used to ask young guys who were angry and potentially up to no good, “the one who gets the bullet? Or the one who pulls the trigger?”
Sadly, one presumes the same principle applies to knives.
If we had laws limiting knife ownership, things like this would never happen. On the other hand, if Santos had carried a gun, there would have been a better outcome. I wonder why the students couldn’t just walk away. Now, society and everyone else will be blamed before the murderer receives his justice.
What kind of people carry knives to a college “party?” Clearly something wrong with the whole mentality from the get-go. If you go with an attitude and pick a fight with a gangbanger mentality, ANYthing can happen — it’s the mindset, not the weapon. One thinks of San Diego as relatively free of the stuff that goes on in south/ East LA, but just goes to show ya.
How tragic for the victim, but we don’t know the details: was this finishing an old grudge, an impulsive act, or what? That several guys attacked the victim suggests the former.
I doubt Nunez’s kid will get off because of his father — if anything, there will be a need to show that justice is impartial. And after his arrogance in the wake of revelations of his six-figure spending on wine and meals in France, which helped lose the state vote for a 3rd term (which you lament re: Romero in other thread: you can thank Nunez for that in part), his fall from power has already been precipitous. Still, he’s apparently gotten remarried to his wife and I think they have younger kids, so he was trying to live a more “traditional” life, to make a fresh start.
What strikes me is that Nunez is pretty young at 40 to have gotten to where he is, while this son is 19, so he was very young when he was born. How involved has he been in the kid’s life, while courting power in Sacramento? What were the kid’s formative influences?
Here is yet another example of the deceit and corruption from the robber baron gavachos usinf ang means necessary to discredit an outstanding young man and his father (Fabian Nunez)
The republican imposed draconian term limits were used to limit the influence of great latino leaders like Fabian Nunez See, now this is why term limits drive us LOCO !!!!
We also desperately need our beloved, inspirational, motivating and highly accomplished mexican american hero -Antonio Villaraigosa as mayor of Los Angeles for the next three decades if he is willing to serve our community. In time in history has Los Angles been recognized for it’s fine arts and cultural and let’s not forget our outstanding and accomplished students which have graduated from the LAUSD.
First of all.. Dont give me that crap about discrediting a fine young man like Estaban Nunez! He is a thug, just like so many other American kids who had everythng, and chose the wrong road. I speak as a mother of one of those thugs. I know what he is. It happens everday. The picture posted should be of the victim, not of a handsome, smiling young man. That is not he face Mr. Santo’s saw the night he was murdered! As far as Mayor what’s his name.. Move on! His agenda should be filled soon enough, and he will be done with LA. Hold me to that.
