In case I didn’t get the message, my voice vanished. Then when I still didn’t stop working, the cold decided to slam me a bit harder. If I feel better, I’ll blog later today.
Otherwise, today’s a chicken soup day and I’ll see y’all tomorrow.
In the meantime, three quick news items:
1. On Wednesday, the 9th Circuit temporarily stayed the earlier decision by Judge Virginia Phillips to ban enforcement of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. LA Times and NY Times have the story.
2. A remarkable and little noticed speech given earlier this month by retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has Stevens talking smack about Antonin Scalia, praising Anthony Kennedy, and naming the decision that he said was one of the Supremes’ least favorite rulings: Harmelin v. Michigan, which found that a life sentence for possession of 672 grams of cocaine was constitutional.
Sentencing Law and Policy has more.
3. Three months ago, Michael Anthony Green was released from a Texas prison after spending 27 years behind bars for a crime that newly tested DNA evidence suggested he did not commit.
On Wednesday, the court went one step further and found Green actually innocent of the crime that sent him to prison for almost three decades. The Houston Chronicle has the story.
Well, of course, police only want DNA testing for prosecution, not defense. Just like they want surveillance cameras on the citizens, but not themselves. They want order in society, while looking the other way from disorder amongst themselves. They want to take away funds from government programs….except their own, where they are willing to bankrupt the state to keep solvent. And then, of course, they want privacy, for themselves, both on the job and in their personal lives, while they have coerced most of society into forfeiting their privacy for the illusion of safety. So, congratulations to Michael Anthony Green, and enjoy the few more opportunities afforded to you in the open air prison called the United States.
BTW, get well, Celeste. Eat lots of fruit and drink tons of water. As my doctor says, you’re never drinking enough water. Stay away from the cheap noodles.
Feel better, Celeste.
You caught cold at the Wellness Foundation? Sorry!
But feel better.
Thanks, guys. (Right, Jim. Ah, the irony.)
Celeste,
If you like garlic, put garlic in whatever you eat. It does wonders. Garlic and Vitamin C.
Be well.
“Just like they want surveillance cameras on the citizens, but not themselves.”
See Patriot Act. It’s still in effect, isn’t it? Haven’t heard much uproar about since the new guy took over.
“They want to take away funds from government programs….except their own, where they are willing to bankrupt the state to keep solvent.”
See the GM bailout. Or Fanny Mae, or Freddie Mac, or Chrysler. For that matter, see all of the unions that AREN’T willing to take a pay cut.
“the open air prison called the United States.”
See a travel agent. LAX has departures as well as arrivals. Why would a guy stay in a country he loathes sooooo much?
Why? Because it’s the best deal going and he knows it.
Waste of time debating Scipt, making fun of him makes more sense.
America is still the best thing going, that I agree with. However, if the police get what they want, that will soon no longer be the case.
You don’t know what the police want, you’re too busy trying to figure out what wall to grafitti tonight.
First I was just a gang groupie and a cop hater, now I’m a tag banger. As Sure Fire gets more outwitted and frustrated on these blogs by citizens who just speak truth to power about where they see law enforcement heading, his labeling gets more and more incriminating. This is a police state tactic. If a citizen makes a clear, intelligent case against abusive police, you label that citizen a criminal. That way you can arrest them. The tea party’s right about one thing. There is a takeover of this country in effect that is similar to Hitler’s takeover of Germany. Of course they didn’t see it until a black president was elected. And they also live in too sheltered of an environment to see who the real gestapos are.
Last thing you can talk about is “labeling”. With all your constant smart ass and demeaning remarks, always absent the facts to back them up, you’re going to whine now because you get some tossed your way? LOL, grow a backbone dude.
You’ve never made a case regarding how you paint the cops, you throw out babble in the form of your first post which mirrors the constant drivel you post every day.
I feel like I’m talking to a high school kid. Tell me you’re at least at some J.C. As it is you’re no challenge Rob so go steal your paint and run off before the Gestapo grabs you.
Well, at least you’re back to accusing me of being a wimp and not having a backbone, etc. lol. And, you’re closer to the truth with that label than you are with the tag banging accusation. Glad my summation of your labeling tactic got to your conscience and made you backpedal, at least. Although I’m certain the results will be temporary.
If you’re going to whine like a baby when you get something in return I’ll call you on it Rob. No need for me to whine about what you say about cops because it’s all fairy tale shit you make up in your head.
