WitnessLA on KCRW With Steve Chiotakis Talking About Shooting deaths of Dijon Kizzee and Andres Guardado and the Problems with LASD Oversight

While we’re talking about the LA County Supervisors’ recently passed motion (see story here), in which the board threatened to sue Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva if the sheriff didn’t start cooperating with civilian oversight of the department’s investigations into such issues as the two most recent controversial shootings by deputies, we thought you might be interested in last week’s broadcast of KCRW’s Greater LA with host Steve Chiotakis.

On the Monday broadcast, Chiotakis and WitnessLA’s editor, Celeste Fremon, talked about the board’s motion (authored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas), along with what we knew at that time about the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee, who was riding his bicycle in the Westmont neighborhood of South LA, when he was stopped for a “violation” of a vehicle code, thus starting a sequence of events that resulted in Kizzee being shot to death by sheriff’s deputies.

Chiotakis and Fremon also talked about some of the community concerns surrounding the fatal shooting by Compton Station deputies of 18-year-old Andres Guardado, and how different our discussions of the two shootings might be if the fourth-largest law enforcement agency in the nation already had body cams.

(Body cameras are scheduled to start rolling out for the LASD in October.)
