Hey, it’s a stressful week
with more jitters still to come (speaking personally, I’m on the verge of a noticeable twitch) so we all need a little levity.

  • Eagleburger Blisters Palin: “Of Course” She’s Not Ready
Former Republican Secretary of State and one of John McCain’s most prominent supporters offered a stunningly frank and remarkably bleak assessment of Sarah Palin’s capacity to handle the presidency should such a scenario arise.
Lawrence Eagleburger, who served as Secretary of State under George H.W. Bush and whose endorsement is often trumpeted by McCain, said on Thursday that the Alaska governor is not only unprepared to take over the job on a moment’s notice but, even after some time in office, would only amount to an “adequate” commander in chief.

“And I devoutly hope that [she] would never be tested,” he added for good measure — referring both to Palin’s policy dexterity and the idea of McCain not making it through his time in office.

The remarks took place during an interview on National Public Radio that was, ironically, billed as “making the case” for a McCain presidency. Asked by the host whether Palin could step in during a time of crisis, Eagleburger reverted to sarcasm before leveling the harsh blow.

  • Virginia Election Board Counters Attempts to Mislead Voters.
    http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6138925&page=1

A flier circulating in parts of the Virginia 2nd said incorrectly that Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters should vote November 4 and that Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents should vote November 5. The flier claimed the separate dates for voting by party were enacted by the Virginia Legislature to ease the strain on the polls.

The Board of Elections quickly issued a statement saying it did not produce the flier, and reminded all voters to get to the polls between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. November 4.

Election tricks by overly zealous partisans are not new, but the flier underscores the tensions in this election year.

  • Mine too. I was getting weepy about Studs Terkel and well, I still am, but I can laugh too. He would have.

Still, about Tuesday – we’ll see. Getting giddy but still worried.

  • Obama has campaigned with more style, intelligence and discipline than his opponent. Whether he can fulfil his immense potential remains to be seen. But Mr Obama deserves the presidency.

  • I tend to put more credence in experience and records rather than promises from someone whose background would have doomed his candidacy if he were a Republican.

    Obama’s Spiral of Silence

If Sen. Barack Obama loses the presidency or wins by far narrower margins than the double-digit lead some mainstream media polls predict, his weak performance will not be the result of the so-called “Bradley Effect,” which holds that black candidates underperform at the polls due to latent racism. Rather, the true culprit will be something public opinion scholars call the “Spiral of Silence Theory.”

In the 1970s, German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann introduced a provocative and startling theory of mass communication she called the “Spiral of Silence.” Noelle-Neumann argued that when mass media create an impression that the majority of society holds one view on a topic, those who hold minority opinions are cowed into a “spiral of silence” for fear of reprisal or isolation from those in the majority.

Since Noelle-Neumann introduced the Spiral of Silence, many studies have confirmed her theory.

  • With the knowledge of the information below and the knowledge of Obama’s close ties with Ayers, I don’t know how any of you can vote for Obama.

Sirhan Sirhan in William Ayer’s Book Dedication

…written by Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn in 1974. It’s called “Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism.”

Now the book reads like a manifesto of the Weather Underground but the most shocking thing is on the dedication page. Mr. Ayers and his band of terrorists devote the book to, quote, “all political prisoners in the U.S.,” and the book then lists about 100 or so names.

Among the names they list a U.S. political prisoner, Sirhan Sirhan. That’s right. This college professor, who is just a guy from the neighborhood who never meant to hurt anybody, who bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, New York City police headquarters, dedicated his book to the man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy.

So how can the same Democrats who are making a million excuses for Ayers and Obama be OK with this?

  • Woody, get a grip man. Prairie Fire was written 34 yrs ago. The statute of limitations for any major crime excepting murder has expired 4X over. This is not to agree with the author’s inclusion of Sirhan in their dedication, but if one views the entire picture in an overview if you will, and also considers the time span involved, then your query doesn’t even warrant an answer.

Secondarily the Dems really aren’t making a lot of excuses for the Ayers/Obama link, they’re merely clarifying the relationship. You seem to want to lessen the distance Obama has put between himself and Ayers over the years. That’s understandable when one views the latest polls. It’s called grabbing at straws, my friend.

  • Oops I forgot. Excellent cover of Madonna’s music, Celeste. Kudos go out to your piano man and once again to you for holding that high note so well. Good job.

  • There is no getting around the fact that Mr Obama’s résumé is thin for the world’s biggest job. But the exceptionally assured way in which he has run his campaign is a considerable comfort. It is not just that he has more than held his own against Mr McCain in the debates. A man who started with no money and few supporters has out-thought, out-organised and out-fought the two mightiest machines in American politics—the Clintons and the conservative right.

Political fire, far from rattling Mr Obama, seems to bring out the best in him: the furore about his (admittedly ghastly) preacher prompted one of the most thoughtful speeches of the campaign. On the financial crisis his performance has been as assured as Mr McCain’s has been febrile. He seems a quick learner and has built up an impressive team of advisers, drawing in seasoned hands like Paul Volcker, Robert Rubin and Larry Summers. Of course, Mr Obama will make mistakes; but this is a man who listens, learns and manages well.

  • At a boisterous Sarah Palin rally in Polk City, Florida on Saturday afternoon, one name was surprisingly absent from the campaign décor — John McCain’s. Talk about throwing McCain under the Straight Talk Express.

  • Analyst, …written thirty-four years ago by unrepentant terrorists and never repudiated by their good friend Obama.

But, if pure passage of time cleanses deeds, then can we quit hearing from liberals about everything that they claim was wrong with Pesident Reagan?

Actually, passage of time doesn’t cleanse the record of the associates of a Presidential candidate. The character and beliefs of a candidate are important, and his associations are a gauge of that.

Boo! Supporting Obama? No treats for you.
Mich. woman shares sweets with only those who back McCain, Palin.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. – A woman refused Halloween candy to children whose parents support Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Shirley Nagel passed out candy Friday on the scary U.S. holiday, but only to those who shared her support for Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his vice presidential pick Sarah Palin.

Television station WJBK reported that a sign posted outside Nagel’s house in suburban Detroit served this notice to children seeking treats: “No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters.”

Nagel told WJBK that “Obama’s scary.” When asked about children who were turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: “Oh well. Everybody has a choice.”
