Electricity Out, Posting Before Noon (okay, make that soonish after) – UPDATED

This is only a highly personal theory, but I’m convinced that Topanga has more incidents of trees (and/or drunk flatlanders) taking out more power lines and/or power poles in than any town west of the Mississippi.
(I’m sure others would dispute this perception as extremely unprovable and likely unsupportable—but, really, what do they know?)
This time it was Julie-the-neighbor’s giant eucalyptus that fell across the street into Antonia-the-neighbor’s yard—taking with it the power lines and sparking a small but nasty-looking fire that, thankfully, was put out quickly as there was no wind.
Ah, Topanga.
The power’s back up now and I will be posting shortly—after I have lots more coffee.
There is much to talk about…..Federal court drama…..that sexual harassment issue with one of the city’s gang agencies…. and more.

UPDATE: APPARENTLY I LIED..….. It’s nearly 2:30 p.m., and I have to leave for me a meeting right now and my post isn’t quite finished. Thus I won’t actually be posting until late tonight. But the story will be a good one.

If it wasn’t giant black widow spiders, I bet a wild koala chewed through the eucalyptus to make it fall. Can’t your cat run them off?

Eucalyptus smell good and boiling the leaves is helpful if you’ve got respiratory problems, but it’s a lousy tree – especially if planted near power lines. They suck up water and have soft, gummy limbs that split off easily. Jack London thought he would make a fortune importing them from Australia for timber – but has anyone ever seen any wood structure actually built from Eucalyptus ? Not likely.

It’s very good for oils and paper products. It grows quickly.
Near Mércia’s family’s beach house in the south of Bahia, Brazil, a company called Bahia Sul has planted an extensive eucalptus forest on abandoned farmland. They put a dirt road right through it and it’s great to go through and jsut breath deeply!

You should have to deal with kudzu. If you take a nap near the plant, it will cover you before you wake up. It’s like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” Telephone poles fare worse.

Some one once told me that when a Eucalyptus is near a fire the heat will begin to evaporate the oils and then combust in to some sort of hellish fireball, spreading the fire. Otherwise, they’re lovely.

You’ve got it right. Eucs are beautiful and fragrant but bad to have anywhere near to one’s house in a fire area. We refer to them as torches. Ditto, pines.
Agreed, Woody. Kudzu’s a little scary. It’ll eat small dogs and the occasional cat.

That’s no doubt true – it starts out kind of oily and mushy as woods go. “Abandoned farmland” – or maybe a park if there’s no major fire hazard – is a great place to plant hem.

I have never seen so many experts pop up on things Eucalyptus. Good Lord, all we need now are Eucalyptus fragrant “Sherms.”

Woody’s right about the kudzu. The only possible advantage is that it if it’s all over your roof, it can drop the indoor temperature by ten degrees.

Goats will eat kudzu. I know a guy who borrowed a couple to clear it from his property. Problem solved in no time. If no Mexican landscapers are available, Topanga should bring in a couple of koalas to handle the eucalyptus problem.
Celeste, does your cat do anything or is it a freeloader like most cats and acts like you owe it a living? Are all cats Democrats?

Hmmm… and I thought that my neighborhood was a record setter for power outages – with no excuse at all since the power lines are buried. Last night, we had 5 hours without power (and then without water, since it is pumped by the power and we up on a mountain). It was 105 degrees and without air conditioning, got unpleasant quickly.
Fortunately, I have a power inverter in my care for storm chasing, so I started it up and plugged in a long extension cord, and into that a fan, a lamp, and, of course, the computer power supply.
But… hearing you mention Topanga brings back good memories from when I lived at Big Rock. What area are you in?
