EDITOR’S NOTE: Chapter Five of our series, The Writer, was originally set to appear today, Monday. But we are still working on it. So, the new publication date for the last chapter of the series will now be Monday, December 11.

The Writer (for those who are coming late to this party) explores what happens when, in 2009, a high school english teacher named Dennis Danziger learns that his most talented writing student at Venice High School—a a 17-year old kid he’s known to be really decent and hardworking—is accused of doing something terrible. In the second chapter, we learn that the kid, whose name is John Rodriguez, is to be charged in adult court with attempted murder. By the end of chapter four, we find that John’s criminal defense attorney, to whom John’s waitress mother has reportedly paid a retainer of $25,000, has done little more than urge John to take a deal for a 22-year sentence in order to avoid a life sentence. John takes the deal and lands in a level IV California State Prison, in Sacramento–CSP-SAC, or New Folsom, as it is colloquially known.

In Chapter Five, however, we fast forward eight-and-a-half years, and learn that the life of Rodriguez, who is now 26, has taken taken a series of very unlikely turns.

You won’t want to miss the story, we promise.

In the meantime here are links to the first four chapters of the story in case you need to catch up.
