What a relief to hear Al is coming back. After being a subscriber to the Times for 37 years, I was getting ready to cancel my subscription. They’re gotten rid of so many great writers, they screwed up the TV guide, they screwed up the comics and deleted so many strips it’s not worth reading anymore.
Al seems like an old friend to me. We frequented the same haunts when he worked for the Oakland Tribune..I worked across the street but we didn’t know each other.
My congrats to you, Al, for beating them at their silly little game. I’ll be on the lookout for your column.

Just read some of the entries on those sites, Larry. Boy the memories. First paper I read was the MIRROR – father brought it home with him from work. Wow – like reading Elroy.

I guess I’ve got another site to add to my expanding web universe.

You’re right. Matt Weinstock and Paul Coates wrote for the Mirror in the 1950s, as did Pepe Arciga, a Latino columnist whom I also run….. I’m really happy to reintroduce them to a new generation of readers.

Thanks for the refs Larry. Anyone here remember Paul Coates’ TV program on KTTV (“times Television”) in the fifties? Didn’t he write for the MIRROR?

These current clowns at the LAT woukld have dropped Jack Smith!

(And I guess if they were in San Francisco would have bought out Herb Caen)
