Campaign Watch II – Red State Girls….and…um…Indonesia

February 5th, 2008 by Celeste Fremon

CAMPAIGN NOTE 1:

Well, the first returns are in and Barack Obama is ahead among…..ex patriot Americans living in Indonesia. Yes, you read right. And weirdly enough this is actually a CNN news story. Out of 100 or so American ex pats casting votes Jakarta, 75 percent went for Barack, the rest for Hillary. (By the way, Americans living—and voting—abroad combine to count as a 22 delegate “state” in Tsunami Tuesday, so noting this first mini-win has some validity as a story I suppose, but still…..)

CAMPAIGN NOTE 2:

Yesterday, a very strongly-worded opinion piece by three red state women appeared in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal. The authors were Janet Napolitano, governor of Arizona, Kathleen Sebelius, the governor of Kansas, and Claire McCaskill , the U.S. senator from Missouri.

It begins:

“Once in a generation, an opportunity comes along
— not just for the Democratic Party, but for the United States of America — to build a new majority for change. Barack Obama’s candidacy offers us that opportunity. As Democrats, and as Americans, we must seize it.

[SNIP]

As Democrats from so-called Red States,
we know that the way to win elections is not just by blaming Mr. Bush, or building campaigns focused on beating the other side — it’s by bringing people together. Americans are fed up with a divisive brand of politics that is more about scoring points than solving problems. To win in November — and to govern this country — we should not choose to be a party that extends an era of bitter partisanship; we must be the party that ends it.

As Op Eds go, it’s a barn burner. I recommend reading the whole thing. (And just in case the WSJ shuts off access, here’s another link to the text.)

CAMPAIGN NOTE 3:

Last night as I was making dinner, I finally watched a video of Sunday’s rally at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. I enjoyed the whole thing, but if you’re not in the mood to sit through fifteen minutes of Oprah who, for no apparent reason suddenly and eerily began talking in Barack’s vocal cadences, I recommend fast forwarding to about the 25-minute mark to watch Michelle Obama. Hers is quite an amazing speech. In fact, if it could be distilled down and then aerial sprayed over the populace, her huz would be elected president with no trouble at all.

CAMPAIGN NOTE 4:

According to the Daily News, if California high school students could decided on the Dem candidate for president, it’d be Obama by a healthy margin. In terms of the grown-ups….well, today’s the day we find out.

Much of the blame lies with the Bush administration. …As Democrats from so-called Red States, we know that the way to win elections is not just by blaming Mr. Bush…. To win in November…we should not choose to be a party that extends an era of bitter partisanship…. We know the Republicans will try to unite their party by fighting the old partisan battles.

There are some contradictions in what these liberal Democrats wrote.

  2. ST Says:

And if you ask California college students (who are of age to vote), it’s Obama by a high margin.

  3. Mavis Beacon Says:

I’m in the young-but-not-youth demo (26 years of wit and wisdom) and tons of friends who I don’t think of as political junkies have emailed me in the past few days to get the Obama vote out. It’s all very nervewracking.

Woody and other cons, any decision on your end now that the race is whittled down? Gotta be Romney, right?

  4. Free at Last Says:

There’s no doubt that it’s a lot more fun to be around an Obama rally than one of Hillary’s. Tonight’s viewing parties will be at the Hollywood nightclub Avalon for Obama’s people, and the IATSE Hall in Burbank for Hillary’s. Wonder which will be more fun, sitting around an overly festooned union hall with a bunch of middle aged “civil rights and feminist warriors” or chilling at a rock venue…

Still, like Richardson says, when “experience is made to sound like leprosy” in this election, something is very wrong, and I am going with my head not my party instincts on this one. She knows how to get things done through compromise, she and Bill were heavily burned but survived the last healthcare battle, and have an improved plan. For all the attempts to make it sound like she’ll put people in debtors’ prison if they don’t buy insurance, her plan is closest to the “Medicare for All” plan currently stalled in the Congress. And if you read today’s Blowback left-right debate on immigration, in the L A Times, the conservative says she’s the “least bad,” of the two, Republican praise.

She sure needs a better party planner, though. Waving flags in union halls with a bunch of earnest older people just isn’t appealing to the young people, wonder why. (However, I caught the tail end of the UCLA rally, and the audience looked more like the women on stage: middle-aged women, not a lot of young people, although they were all over campus. Guess even with Obama it depends on the venue/attraction.)

  5. Celeste Fremon Says:

Thanks for bringing up the party option issue.

FYI: Here are the addresses for both. (I just sent them out to my USC students, so I happen to have them on hand.)

The Hillary Clinton party is at the IATSE Local 80 Union Hall in Burbank, 2520 WEST OLIVE AVENUE, BURBANK, 91505 – starts around 9 PM

The Barack Obama party is at the Avalon in Hollywood, 1735 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA 90028 (323) 462.8900 – starts around 8:30 PM

  6. Woody Says:

Celeste, did you send your students the party list of the Republican candidates? Surely, you did, so as to not allow people like me to say that this is just one more example of liberal college professors attempting to indoctrinate students.

  7. Woody Says:

Are many of you aware that tomorrow we’ll know the results of the most important time in the country? It’s national signing day for high school players to commit to college football teams.

    Countdown to National Signing Day:
    00 DAYS 10 HRS 48 MIN 04 SEC

  8. Celeste Fremon Says:

Woody, in answer to your question, yes, but only to McCain’s. Couldn’t easily find Huckabee’s or Romney’s.

  9. Woody Says:

Proof that liberals are secretly backing McCain.
