Picking the Chief of Police: And the 3 Are…….

October 27th, 2009 by Celeste Fremon

As any avid LAPD watcher knows by now, the short list of three is: First Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, Deputy Chief Charlie Beck and Deputy Chief Michael Moore

Much more soon after I get back from USC.

This has to be the hardest choice for the Mayor. All 3 are really excellent, first class, and supremely qualified.
Each has his own particular qualities and it really boils down to this:
Jim: Very popular with the troops and community (Think: Obama/Reagan)
Charlie: Solid, by the book (Think: Joe Friday)
Michael: Forward thinker (Think: Steve Jobs)

I’m glad I don’t have to make the choice, because each of them will make great Chiefs, but I have to admit that Jim’s experience as Bratton’s #2 makes him a close favorite.

Then again, Charlie Beck’s a fantastic organizer and knows how to get things done – rape kit backlog, and knows how to give very clear, very easy to understand instructions. Moore’s younger and more of an ‘out of the box’ thinker. Shit. All three are great!

One thing’s for sure, whichever of them is selected, Los Angeles is the winner.
