Ms. Fremon
Your opinion is really on target. However, dont make Ex-Chief Bratton into an idol or saint. He made a handful serious political & personal mistakes which resulted in his prompt retirement.

"The men and women who also wanted Beck’s new job are each enormously talented. Let’s not lose them"

I agree and hope is Beck is smart and puts the two other contenders in high profile positions to the benefit of the city a la Obama.

When Parks was selected he went out of his way to humiliate Mark Kroeker, the other finalist. Kroeker soon after left the LAPD. It foretold the petty reign of Parks. Hope Beck sets a different tone.

Celeste a most excellent post. You never seem to amaze me with your analysis. The LA Times really screwed up reporting a story the next day after the Mayor announced Beck trying to spin but it was too late. Unfortunately, the blogs were going crazy and Joel must have read them to write that story with all the negative hits and people pissed at the process. There were too many insiders who were telling anyone who would listen that the police commissioners were TOLD by the Mayor's office who to put on the final 3. When the Times reported weeks ago Bratton was campaigning behind the scenes that already tainted the process. The Mayor owes Bratton for giving LAPD a positive perception and let's face it the Mayor doesn't have anything positive in his own administration to speak of but tons of negatives. Cops like Beck and his mentality of he supports what they do out in the streets cause he's been there. I only wish Beck can remove himself away from the negative, narcissistic Mayor and be able to run his dept. without the Mayor's interference. McDonnell and Moore both had a lot of people and cops pulling for them. Beck has said he will work with them and they aren't going anywhere.
