Celeste it would make perfect sense if it were true but its not. Let’s face it everyone knows the selection process was fixed. Bratton blew it by campaigning for Beck months before he left and taking him, a detective who had nothing to do with cars to Australia. Beck is trying to spin and say McDonnell and Papa wanted jobs as Chief in other depts. This is so false. The troops are demoralized and have almost no confidence in Beck’s leadership now. He’s promoting Michael Moore who has an active personal complaint, yet if it were a regular officer no promotion or anything. You don’t demote two people who were part of a team that helped fix LAPD and had more popularity with the troops then all of Beck’s buddies he promoted. There is no doubt more stories will soon be coming out. Rumors are rapidly filtering out of the 10th floor.

The true reason for the demotion of McDonnell and Papa is that they will both be seeking Chief positions somewhere in the near future – period. By trying to forge a future strategic and operational flow it only hurts the department if they decide to depart in the early stages. It will only shake up the ranks again. This is commonsense. In his defense we can be assured that Beck has had his conversations with them and as professionals they understand. They would have done the same if appointed. So why are we being unprofessional to assume that Beck has it in for people. That is ridiculous! This is not about individuals, it is about the people of the Department and the City of Los Angeles. Be a part of the solution and not the problem.

Yes some of this is mystifying, but but sad and yet to be expected nonetheless, to see all the sniping about Beck, all the conspiracy theories and attacks on his character and his alleged motives, on Bratton’s alleged motives and influence (which often make no sense and seem inherently conflicted) from the “usual suspect” blogs and papers like Ron Kaye, the Weekly, etc. Alleged devious doings involving Australian cars instead of American ones, allegations repeated over and over until those like Janet believe as fact that “the selection process was fixed,” how these staff changes which are any chief’s perogative “show his lack of management skills,” (her phrase again), how it’s allegedly demoralizing “putting all your buddies in primo spots.” (While all these same conservatives laud someone like Trutanich coming in and putting two OUTSIDERS in top asst. spots just because they campaigned for him, Berger and Jane Usher, and taking other top picks from the DA etc. while openly trying to get rid of Rocky’s people even if they have seniority and are qualified.) Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and see how it shakes out.

Celeste you must read Ron Kaye’s post. Great stuff movies are made of why this all went down. Everyone knows the “real reason” Beck demoted McDonnell and Papa. Its already hurting Beck’s reputation with the troops. They are beyond pissed off at demoting and humiliating two favorite Assistant Chiefs they liked because they respected the troops unlike Bratton, Beck and the rest of the goons on 10th floor. I will venture and say this is not good for Beck coming out of the gate. First Joel Rubin’s piece confirming what a lot of people said the selection process was fixed. And now demoting two successful team members who for 7 years made Bratton look good. Shows his lack of management skills, lack of knowledge of how to get the best out of your troops and not demoralize them and putting all your buddies in primo spots.
