FUTURE OF JOURNALISM: Where Blogs Get Their Links

April 17th, 2009 by Celeste Fremon

future-of-newspapers.jpg

Yesterday, the Daily Kos put up a fascinating bit of data collection that quantified
where their site gets the preponderance of its stories.

I don’t know how representative it is of the patterns of other blogs. But it offers some intriguing clues. Here’s what they said.

Whenever we debate the future of newspapers, inevitably someone asks, “if they go out of business, where will blogs get their stories?” That’s a companion argument to “who will conduct investigative journalism”? Well, just as a wide range of journalistic enterprises are conducting investigative reporting (including online news outlets, television stations, and advocacy groups), so too will we get our news from a variety of different sources. In fact, we already do.

Out of curiosity, I decided to see where the new
s we discuss on this site came from the past week, from Monday, April 6, to Sunday, April 12. If we linked to a source that got its information from another site, we followed the links until we got to the original source of the reporting (“secondary” source). In other words, I wanted to categorize the original source of information for every (front page) post on the site. Here’s the results of that link inventory:

Newspapers: 102 primary, 21 secondary
Blogs: 83 primary, 19 secondary
Advocacy organizations: 77 primary, 9 secondary
Television network: 69 primary, 14 secondary
Online news organizations: 54 primary, 5 secondary
Magazines and journals: 36 primary
Political trade press: 28 primary
Research/polling: 20 primary
Wikipedia: 21 primary, 8 secondary
Educational (.edu): 15 primary
Government: 14 primary, 5 secondary
Campaigns: 13 primary
Books: 6 primary
AP and other Wire: 5 secondary
Radio: 4 primary

“Online news organizations” include web-centric publications conducting original journalism, like HuffPo, and TPM. “Political trade press” are the DC-centric political newspapers: CQ, The Hill, Roll Call, and Politico….

  1. Woody Says:

The Daily Kos’s list of its sources left off Russia.

Where do newspapers get their information? From left-wing advocacy organizations, of course.

The curious case of 200 nearly identical MSM headlines

The following headlines have appeared in newspapers within the last 24 hours. (People without health insurance.) …All of the stories were marketed by a liberal “advocacy group” called Families USA. According to Discover the Networks, Families USA is a member of the “Progressive States Network”, which works closely with (you guessed it) ACORN and the SEIU.

…The mainstream media’s willingness to act as an unthinking public relations arm for a tiny minority of left-wing radicals is truly despicable. But it’s not unexpected for an industry destined, in large part, for the black hole of bankruptcy.

Many newspaper editors and journalists have gotten lazy. Someone else will pick the headline stories for them if they don’t get out themselves and do it properly.

  2. Woody Says:

Oops, that last paragraph was mine–not a quote from the linked source.

  3. Woody Says:

One other thing, it would be interesting to see how Kos classified certain sources in comparison to how others might. For instance, were advocacy blogs included in the blogs listing or as advocacy organizations? Did they put MSNBC or FOX News under advocacy organizations?

More facinating would be seeing the detailed list of sources under each category. Unlikely that it’s “fair and balanced.”

  4. dacalicious Says:

Not to be overly anecdotal, but I was surprised & disgusted when the H. Post splattered a tabloid banner yesterday that made it sound as 1,500 Indian farmers had collectively committed suicide a la Jim Jones, linking only to an opinion piece that was beyond soft on facts, all nattering opinion with no background. THAT piece linked to a short piece on a British blog that inaccurately used the term “mass suicide” in its headline without offering any (non-existent) details or facts. & THIS is the future of journalism? Oh boy!!!!

  5. Irv Mudderman Says:

    another post…pwetty pleeeassseee!

  6. BITH (Gava Joe) Says:

That’s a great post, Celeste. Rush Limbaugh is one of my main sources. Hey, I know everyone hates him. But my prison experience has taught me to just follow the truth, no matter who it comes from. I voted for Obama but I am having second thoughts now. I don’t want socialism. My grandfather came here from Austria on a piece of drift wood to escape socialism. Of course, his bumper sticker business was eventually bought out by wal mart, and he’s now on welfare. Sometimes he actually does curse and say that the welfare he got in Austria was better than this. The irony’s deafening. Hey, I never said the guy was sane. Anyhow, great blog. Looking forward to more.

  7. SNG Says:

Well, other than The Advocate and Out, I’d say my main source of info is People magazine. Maybe Glamour.

  8. Woody Says:

My main source is myself. I assimilate information and express my own analyses on situations. My views are original and without guidance from Limbaugh or anyone else. Getting factual information from outside sources is one thing. Giving proper interpretation to that is another. I see little original thought from the left.

BTW, everyone knows, Gava Joe, that convicts are Democrats. After all, which party has worked so hard to allow felons to vote?

  9. Rob Thomas Says:

My main source is Playgirl oops I mean Source Magazine.

  10. Gava Joe (real) Says:

The real Gava Joe should tell you, Woody that I’m so removed from the “convict” mindset that in my case political affiliations are a moot point. Gut feelings and appropriate responses are tantamount to any success in the Free World. You should also know that the above posts using my handle are fraudulent and in no way reflect my stance on the issues. I consider myself a Libertarian, am for across the board legalization of drugs, am pro choice, and would vote tommorrow for any measure that would limit the size of our behemoth government. I finished my time with the CDC in 1973, received the requisite release, and went on to find some happiness far removed from my past mistakes. Incidently I wasn’t able to vote until I’d completed parole and haven’t missed a General Election since 1975. The idiot who keeps trying to smear the Gava joe name I chose long ago is foolish to think his ploys have any relevance. It should also be noted that my radar goes bonkers when I hear any statements out of the maw of Rush Limbaugh. Selah.

  11. Woody Says:

Gava Joe (the real one), I’m happy for you and applaud the recovery and progress that you made in your life. You have my vote.

(See, Celeste. There are people who can start a new life after prison rather than fall back into crime and who blame others and the justice system for their personal failures.)

  12. Celeste Fremon Says:

    OKAY, LISTEN UP PEOPLE:

I’m sick to death of trying to sort out the names, (real and fake) and the IP addresses, and who is the real whomever. This is an incredibly stupid game of which I will no longer be a part.

If it’s fun for y’all, great. Take it elsewhere.

SO HERE’S THE DEAL: As long as everyone behaves, they may stay. I don’t care if you’re the “real” or “fake” whomever, or whether you’re one in the same person with a multiple IPs and an elaborate personality disorder. I’m over it.

The minute things get racist or I get one of those “my dear abuelita” comments (which are mostly boring), I’m deleting the comment. In other words, if you behave like a child, I will oblige you by giving you a time out.

Racist sometimes being in the eye of the beholder, let me put it this way, if I think a comment is part of this ongoing game that y’all seem to have been playing on multiple other blogs, it’s gone.

Sometimes it may take me a while to get to deleting as I actually have something of a life away from this blog, plus two very consuming university teaching jobs, a book to finish researching and writing, and an MFA to complete this June, but get to it I will.

If you are someone who honestly is being victimized by someone else using your nom de blog, I will judge that by the seriousness and quality of your comments….and I welcome your presence.

To the rest of you; GROW THE FUCK UP.

  13. SNG Says:

    You tell them, girlfriend.

  14. don quixote Says:

Good for you Celeste, these knuckleheads have used the same tactics at other blogs in order to suppress free speech and opinion, especially if the blog has a liberal bent or commentators that argue a left wing perspective. What they want is to fill up your blog with goofy nonsensical personal attacks, the same couple of fascists will go back and forth with this excrement ad nauseum until the blog master just throws up their hands and disallows any comments.
It’s a tactic as old as Joseph Goebbels and the propaganda Nazi’s.
Thanks for your efforts towards free expression and civilized dialog.

  15. Gava Joe (real) Says:

Good comment DQ. You keep an eye on those Republicans and we can all sleep better and share more stimulating dialogue.Large props to Don Quixote.

  16. Mr. Worf Says:

Gentlemen, Celeste has set the phasers on puree, it is my hope that we can all act with a little decorum around here and add as little disorder to Miss Celeste’s life.

  17. StillNoScript (real) Says:

Good post Don Q , you always have some words of wisdom and take the high road in any situation. I can honestly say I idolize you.

Gava Joe might raise snakes out in Kansas, but I swollow them here in Saramento.

  18. Celeste Fremon Says:

    Last warning #17.

  19. #17 Says:

Celeste I understand you don’t want your site to turn into a forum where people are attacking other people for issues that started on other blogs and I appologize for using your site for other purposes than it was intended for, but why am I being singled out? I actually don’t even frequent your site. I might drop in every couple of months or so when it is mentioned on one of the other blogs, but recently I was told my name was being used over here by somebody else. Sure enough I find this :

Well, other than The Advocate and Out, I’d say my main source of info is People magazine. Maybe Glamour.

… And there are others too. He uses Gava Joe’s name (check comment #6 ) Still No Script , Rob Thomas, Thomas Robbie and more. So you can block me, ban me, whatever you feel you need to do, like I said I’m not here that often anyway but you might want to keep an eye on the guy with the IP in Sacramento also. By the way I gotta give you props. Most people would delete the fake comments, you left them up and just issued warnings thats pretty cool. As for Don Quixote’s comment up there. Too funny. Don invented the alias eh Santiago?

  20. Celeste Fremon Says:

Still No Script (#17) , If I unfairly singled you out, I’m sorry. If so, it is because I mistook you for one of the other impersonators. The scorecard gets a little confusing.

There was the fake Still No Script, then you, the real Still No Script. Then the fake Still No Script, pretending to be the real Still No Script. Then the real and fake Gava Joe’s.

It gets head-spinning and vexing, so I lost patience and started spraying bullets in all directions. Sorry if I hit you in the process.

You are most welcome to be here and to comment.

  21. Gava Joe Says:

It’s uncanny how I can stand in the middle of a fussilade of spraying bullets and not be hit, yet sure as hell I can try to venture over to the darkside and some remnant of a Sputnik orbiting the planet for 60 years can drop directly on my head. It’s uncanny, or maybe Karmic.

Thanks again for what you do, Celeste. It’s your blog. Go postal at will.

  22. SNG Says:

Gava Joe, you’re so smart, and so experienced. Tell us about bikers and california, and taco trucks, and prison, and kansas, and everything! You’re so knowledgable, and write with such prose! You’re the most important person in the world to me.

  23. SNG Says:

BTW, I’m not going to sink down to any of this nonsense anymore. Celeste, I apologize for my complaining earlier. I trust you to moderate the site. I’m a former gang member from San Jose, and I’ve grown up. I’m above cyber battles, so I’m ashamed of myself when I find myself rapped up in them. I’m sorry.

  24. SNG Says:

There’s a 2Pac song that reminds me of my life’s situation. Reminds me of the old life, and wakes me up to the circumstances of it. It’s called “dear momma”.

  25. RobThomas Says:

Why is it “dear momma”? Always crying for mom whenever rival gangs confronted you?

  26. SNG Says:

I won’t respond. I’m above the battles of common man, and I’m respecting this blog. You’re soon to be banned though, Script o Thomas.

  27. #17 Says:

Wow #22-26 must have some kind of multiple personality disorder.

  28. Gava Joe Says:

#22 Why thank you I’m beside myself not really knowing how to accept adoration. All I can say is “I’m ferklempt and need a moment”. Please everyone, talk among yourselves.

  29. Celeste Fremon Says:

You guys need your own theater group. I see that now. It’s all very Ionesco.
