Woody, agreed. Teaching self-reliance is always a good thing. That seems to be what YJC is all about.

John, the charter school movement is a great example of where liberals and conservatives have come together to get work done for the common good when the institutions have failed. May there be more work of the same nature.

Will they guarantee that no one will drive off with the cars?

Really, I hope that they do well. One lesson for them is that they can obtain what they want without depending upon government. More schools should teach that.

Celeste - that's a great story and I hope they have continued success. Every juvenile rescued is good for them and all of us.

Note that Charter Schools are a result of conservatives wanting to provide alternatives to the often ineffectual and bloated public system. This is a great application for that principle.

AC, this is an unusually idiotic criticism.

If you're going to throw rocks at me, at least try to base your criticism in something resembling facts.

In this particular instance, it might have helped if you'd even read the post a little more carefully: I'm a fan of the Youth Justice Coalition, whose central mission and whose years of work and accomplishments, with which I am very familiar. I was not, however, acquainted with one of their newer joint projects---namely, the school---so I have begun to research it. (<em> Begun</em> is the operative word here.)

You, on the other hand, appear to be entirely uninterested in getting any actual information on what you repeatedly and ignorantly criticize. It's boring.

By the way, the "illegal" trope is getting awfully tired.

You're right about one thing. I'm pretty much across the board in favor of educating any and all kids in the State of California, as opposed to not educating them. Purely in terms of taxpayer expense, it's a lot cheaper to educate people than to lock 'em up.

Facts are your friend, AC, I promise.

"<i>I’ve been a YJC fan for some years, but knew nothing about the school. So I called the YJC offices yesterday afternoon to get a few details, and spoke to sixteen-year-old Maritza Galvez, who is both a youth organizer for YJC and a student at FreeLA High.

I asked how she landed at FreeLA and Maritza told me that she was attending Locke High School when her mother was arrested and jailed for eight months on the a charge that she was smuggling Illegal immigrants from Mexico. "</i>

************************

You covered many of you pet causes here, supporting any social program without "knowing anything about it".

Supporting what are most likely illegal aliens at USA taxpayers expense. The state should collect triple the taxes from Celeste and Don Quackers who believe it's America's duty to support every illegal who sneaks across the border.
