It was not at all cheering to hear yesterday’s announcement that the Bush Administration is delisting the grizzly—although it was not unexpected. Grizz have spent over 30 years on the endangered species list and, in that time, they have made slow but steady progress. (In the bad old days there were just a few hundred in the lower 48 states.) Conservation groups like the Sierra Club and others worry that it’s still much too early to delist them. There are approximately 1,100 to 1,400 bears in the lower 48, most of them located the Yellowstone/Glacier corridor. In short, it’s safe to say that neither America nor the local ecosystem is in any great danger of being overrun by bears. (Although Stephen Colbert would assuredly tell you otherwise.)

My mother is from Montana so I’ve spent a lots of time in the Glacier Park area over the years and have been lucky enough to have seen six or seven of the glorious beasts while up there. (The dog is always a bit undone by them.)

Why, here’s one now!

   Celeste, I checked and the grizzly bear can hardly be found on the streets of Los Angeles, which proves that they need more protection! Thanks for this street news of injustice.

   BTW, for people whose lives are consumed by matters such as this, amend the blog name to “WitlessLA.”

   And lest we forget. The administration is discouraging scientists from talking about polar bears threatened by warming temps in the Artic endangering their habitat. Seems that people find them warm and cuddly (which they are anything but I might add) so it looks like Cheney out there shooting Bambi’s mother.

   (How’s that for mixing species as well as metaphors!)

   Polar bears aren’t threatened. That’s made up hype. BTW, af I remember correctly, polar bears and grazzies are the same species. And, what’s wrong with shooting Bambi’s mother if the hunter was feeding his family? Anyway, if he hadn’t shot her, some car would have hit her.

   The two of you completely made my morning with this discussion.

   Woody, about hunting, if you can find it, read Thomas McGuane’s essay on the subject, “The Heart of the Game.” It’s really fabulous. (McGuane lives in Montana, and is a hunter—and a great prose stylist.)

   And, yes, you’re right, bears aren’t a social issue. But I do believe that protection of the great north American predators—wolves, grizzlies, polar bears, et al—is, in fact, extremely important. (Don’t even get me started on the wolf thing. I’ve tracked ‘em from the air and on the ground with biologists. You ain’t heard nothin’ until you’ve heard wolves howl in the wild!)

   Admittedly, part of the reason I’m a serious grizz fan is that I identify strongly with their mothering attitudes, which can be summed up as the following: “Look, everything’s going to be fine unless you mess with my cub, in which case, you’re lunch, Jack!”

    Привет всем, млин тут комп не давно сломался и остался я без компа и инета аж на целых 5 дней! Епт такой тошняк был пока не починил, ведь есть все таки зависимость от компьютора как ни крути.
